I'm sorry, I don't know where exactly to post this, but "anxiety" seemed to be the best fit. I am trying to keep my cool, but I have almost reached my boiling point.

So, September 7 of last year, my neighbor was stabbed to death and my condominium building was set on fire. Unfortunately, my unit was directly below the one that was set on fire (by the murderer). As a result, the entire side of our building (and my unit) was destroyed. My homeowner's association was almost sympathetic with me and my husband at first, but they said something that just really irritated and confused us, "So sorry for your loss. Don't forget to pay your condo fees! Just because you were burnt out of your place doesn't mean you don't have to pay!"

Of course, we're sitting there thinking "we've lost everything we had. Oh my god" and they tell us to keep paying our condo fees? Are you serious? I've tried so hard to be civil (no cursing), but it's getting very difficult with these people. So, we asked them the day after the fire how long the restoration was going to take, what with the criminal investigation that was going on. Everyone, including the home owner's association says 3 months. 3 months, 3 months, yeah, 3 months. Ok, I said, fine, that sounds fine. Now everyone has amnesia and no one remembers telling me "3 months" even though I made sure to ask multiple people multiple times and even added in "are you absolutely 100% sure of 3 months?" Everyone gave the same response "oh absolutely, that will be no problem". It wasn't an unreasonable time frame, so I felt confident about it.

First, it's been SEVEN months and our condo STILL isn't done and isn't even CLOSE to being done. The restoration crew that the association hired doesn't work but maybe twice a week and the team SUCKS, to be honest. As a matter of fact, for the 2 months after they tore everything out of the condo, the team did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. And when they do work, they make so many mistakes that I just want to boot them all out.

The crew makes so many mistakes it's like they take 2 steps forward and 5 steps backward. For example: they installed the smoke detectors while the ceilings were still down, but messed them up; my electrician fixed the smoke detectors for them because it was obvious they had no idea what they were doing; the crew put the ceilings up and covered the smoke detectors because they are a bunch of idiots; the crew started punching holes in the ceilings only to discover that they completely forgot where the smoke detectors were and then had to take the new ceilings down; they reinstalled the ceilings, but messed up in the living room, meaning they had to start over; they re-reinstalled the ceilings but then covered up the dining room light box... AGAIN.

That's just one example. They've done the same thing over and over again everywhere else. My husband and I have been checking in on the crew and calling the project manager on a very regular basis to remind them of the things they are supposed to do or fix. It's becoming extremely exhausting and extremely frustrating for us because it is so obvious that they are in way over their heads and we really don't want our condo to be messed up.

On top of this garbage, we've been in touch with our homeowner's association, trying to get their help in keeping the restoration crew on track, or possibly getting them to hire a DIFFERENT crew that actually knows what they're doing. What is their reaction? "I don't know what you want us to do about it. It's between you and them as far as I'm concerned"

AAAUUUUGH!!!! YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME! They literally said that to us. I was absolutely floored. These people are so absolutely out of their minds that I can't believe why we pay them so much in condo fees every month for ABSOLUTELY NO REASON. It's not like they even repair our building. The stairs, railings, and awnings look absolutely horrendous and we can't get them to take care of that. They're so preoccupied with stashing money away in their reserves (they bragged that they have over $1 Million in reserves) that they openly ignore all homeowners who demand that they spend that money to fix the damned buildings. They told us about the reserves at a homeowner's meeting, and immediately all of the angry homeowners demanded that money be spent on aging infrastructure, broken windows, cracked sidewalks, and the like. It is an absolute joke how badly our buildings look. We live in a very well-to-do city surrounded by very nice looking homes. It's not exactly cheap to live there, and yet, our buildings look like friggin crack houses! My neighbors have been making demands for building repairs for YEARS and NOTHING has happened.

They got angry with US for wanting a say in how OUR money is spent on OUR homes. It is ABSOLUTELY ridiculous. I know my neighbors are furious and want to throw all of the people on the board out the window and get a new board, but for the time being, I'm just not sure what to do with all of this. My husband and I are absolutely suing this awful board for the hell they've put us through, and we are swimming in evidence to support our claims, but it's just so stressful! I am so upset that we can't get one scrap of sympathy about our loss from our homeowner's board. I have never encountered such a heartless and incompetent group of people in my life!

I guess I just needed to rant about it a little...
Has anyone else run into this kind of laziness/incompetence?

Hi Vee - I am soooo sorry you have to go through! What a bunch of incompetent, insensitive losers I'd be going out of my mind too! There's nothing worse than getting the run around and being treated with such disrespect when you've been through something so traumatic.

Hang in there! Hugs. Heather

Sorry you're having such a tough time with all of this. I can imagine the anxiety involved being displaced from your home for so long. Dealing with HOAs can be very frustrating and especially when it is a condo.

The HOA is responsible for repair to the building itself but any repairs that are needed inside your condo: from the drywall/ceiling and in is your responsibility. Your homeowner's insurance should be responsible for the cost of those repairs and your/your husband would be the ones in charge of hiring and overseeing the work. So I'm confused when you're talking about the crew hired by your HOA replacing your ceiling...that's not something that usually falls under the responsibility of the HOA. That's something that would be yours/your insurance's responsibility. Is it possible that it is taking so long because not everyone is clear who has responsibility for which repair issues?

Just trying to help. Obviously I don't have information about your specific situation and am speaking in terms of how things generally work with condo associations.

(((Vee))) It is a truely horrendous situation for you both.

I've never had such a major problem but on an almost weekly basis I have to chase other companies/people who don't do their job.

I hope you get to move back into your home soon. I'm pleased you have plenty of evidence, take photos as well.

Take care

Clearly, Maryland is very different. Lol. I am finding out more and more that we have crazy laws here.

In Maryland, the condo association is responsible for all damages up to the original state of the condo and our insurance is supposed to cover the cost of any upgrades. Despite this very clearly written law, the condo association has decided to ignore it, but at the same time, they are acknowledging that they are ignoring it. It's honestly confusing listening to them talk. They know, but they don't know, and they ordered something even though they didn't know about it for it to be ordered.

No, it's very clear that the HOA is responsible for everything and we're responsible for our upgrades only, which is why they hired the restoration crew to do the repairs to the entire building. The problem is really that the HOA hired these idiots and then decided that it wasn't their problem anymore. If the crew messes up, the HOA will have to pay to fix it, but we are tired of waiting and waiting only to see screw up after screw up. Oh, and they will be paying for their laziness. Maryland law also has provisions to protect homeowners from abusive HOAs and we are definitely taking advantage of that.

Omg, I have a bazillion photos. I was so angry at my condo association when they said they needed "written" evidence. I showed them a slideshow like "here's the condo on November 2nd, and here it is looking exactly the same way on December 26th, and here it is looking exactly the same on January 16th. And, here's a picture from March 4th. They moved a box and broke a toilet. So, your crew isn't doing anything but breaking my stuff."

I swear, the association is made up of the dumbest people on the planet. They tried to tell us that us hiring an electrician slowed everything down by 4 months. REALLY! THEY slowed OUR electrician down. Our guy was done in 6 hours. One day. UM???? Where are they getting 4 months from?!?!

*ANGER*

  • The destruction to one"s home is hard to deal with at the best of times. I unfortunately have traveled this path to some degree. I was told after the hurricane that it would take 2 - 3 months to fix my house. I was out from mid Sept till May. I only wish there were a way for you to get a payout so that the repairs could be done at a faster pace and with your contractors. The frustration, stress, and anger are all very valid in your situation. I really hope they will get on task. I wish I had the answers. I am sorry you too are living in repair hell.

Just a thought. Have you tried the local press? it's not as whifty or impracticle as it sounds. Obviously at the moment noone is having a slow news day but sometimes they are. They look around for things which come in and sometimes decide to go do a story, you know. You just send them some info, like that whole story, as an outraged citizen/owner, and they get in touch with you. It's worked for me twice for different things. The best one was when our little school board was going to let a poor child who had constructed death threats back into school with no treatment and not protection for the kids who she'd threatened. I took a chance, sent the details to all the stations, one was having a slow day and showed up at the next board meeting. They found me, the story hit the news, the board shamed into action and the child was given the help required while others were kept safe. You just never know what will catch someone's interest, that's all. It's kind of playing hard ball, but so are these dreadful people.

Night- I'm glad to know that someone knows what I'm dealing with. It's a little comforting with all of this mess. I'm sorry you had to go through losing your home to a hurricane. :( *hugs*

Anni - I think that's a really good idea. I think I might just do that... It's really good that you were able to get help for that child. I think it's just so sad that a child so young would be doing that. I really wonder what was going on at home for her... Yeah, I already did the public shaming for the apartment my husband and I went to after the fire. It was INFESTED with roaches and the leasing office was just like "yeah, and?" so we got out of the lease and I pasted the pictures with the roaches everywhere. Maybe we should do some public shaming for these people...
