Modern medicine usually considers trauma -- both the physical and the psychological kinds -- as unequivocally damaging. Now researchers are lending support to a more philosophical view of suffering, finding that trauma, however terrible, may have distinct psychological benefits.

I spend a lot of time wondering how my kids will turn out. They have a much lower than average startle point (to contrast with my higher than average). They are incredibly empathetic. They are good at knowing that some things are about them and some things just aren't. My three and five year old understand the difference between being yelled at because they did something wrong and being yelled at when someone is just cranky. When someone is just cranky they turn around and yell back that it isn't ok to treat them that way.

I really wonder how the long run will go. I cross my fingers. They make me so happy to be alive.
