Hi Bartie
If you are not happy with it then you have every right to make a decision that you do feel ok with. If this means that you would prefer to talk to him first on his own then you should let him know that. Remember he only suggested it.
The point of Therapy is to help you and any T worth her salt should know that therapy works better if the client is totally for it and feels safe in what is about the happen. How can they expect you to be open with the fear of judgement or attack. Any good therapist should not be judgemental or impliment her personal feelings into the meeting, she is suppose to remain proffesional, her personal feelings do not even come into it. It has to be a positive environment.
In view of this I think you should have a meeting with him first, explain your fears and worries i.e she does not understand what I am telling her. I feel I am not going forward I have reached a plateau. We are not on the same wavelength anymore and you resent going there, you cannot even trust her response to this.
As a proffesional she should not get defensive because she is not experienced enough to help you in this instance. She should realise that she cannot even begin to know everything either.
Then I think you must face her as well with your psych present. The point of therapy is talk and listen. That goes both ways. With better understanding of each other things can change and move forward but you have to communicate properly about the problems for this to happen. It might be that you can explain it to her is a different way after talking to your psych and she understand better. That will help you both.
By doing both within a reasonable space of time you are not avoiding the situation either but making sure you are more in control when it does happen.
I hope that helps a bit.
best wishes
Saffy :)
ps, we are still behind you :)
