You know... One of the things that blew my mind in college was learning that Lewis & Clark weren't the first explorers west (Major US sent expedition. Nope. They were the second). I can never remember the names of the first two guys...but they were given Ambassador Status. They signed over 300 treaties with the various tribes and nations as they crossed the US (and are why Lewis & Clark were met with aid & guides everywhere they turned), and not only found better passes through a lot of the ranges, but they went halfway to Alaska (lots further than L&C).
So these 2 guys and their expedition, they come home, new administration, and the new admin is pissed. Because they have an entirely different plan for the west than the previous administration (conquer instead of treat & trade). They shushed up most of the news, threw together the L&C expedition in a mad rush, and sent L&C out without ambassador status. I want to say in less than a week, but it may have been less than a month.
A lot of those treaties are null & void, because the tribe is now extinct, but one just won in the Supreme Court something like 8 years ago. And it's still all hush hush. Ignore the man behind the curtain. This neeeever haaaaaappened. Shhhhhhhhhh. Like the fact that we break treaties is a national secret or something. But it simply blows my mind how many people are never taught this. It's all Lewis & Clark, Lewis & Clark. My son's US History teacher didn't even know it! I had to bring in all my college coursework from that class to get my son's grade improved (for answering "wrong" a lot of the q's about westward expansion).
