The thing is, Trump isn't a politician, he's a narcissist. He talks because he likes the sound of his own voice. He says things because he finds them appealing in the moment. He isn't a classical conservative, or liberal, or progressive in any sense of any of those. He's just a narcissist. He doesn't HAVE any beliefs, other than that' he's the most special person on the planet. He gets an idea and shares it because he's sure it's got to be special because it's his. There is no plan and there will be no consistency. It's remotely possible that some of his ideas are good. Being a narc doesn't mean you have to be stupid or that all your ideas are bad. It just means the more power you have the more dangerous you are.

While I'm sad that I can spot a narcissist quickly due to frequent exposure at an early age, what makes me feel absolutely hopeless is the fact that there are millions and millions and millions of people out there who have no clue what narcissism is and as such they're ripe for the picking when one comes along. I literally see this phenomenon in every encounter with a narcissist in every type of environment where I've encountered one. I understand that a large part of it is due to zero exposure on the part of others, but it's still mind blowing to me because I don't understand why people are so incredibly blind to his blaring inconsistencies! Or maybe I have too much faith in the human race?

@eve, I totally echo your thoughts. It's freaking unbelievable. I think part of Trump's appeal is that he appeals to the basest instincts in some people and they are willing to go along with whatever he says because he validates their base instincts. Umm, does this sound in any way familiar to another individual earlier in the 20th century in western Europe?

@JMH, you will always have my undying gratitude for your efforts in the no Trump campaign. You did everything you could and from one PTSDer to another, I can imagine it took a hell of a lot out of you to do it, but do it you did, and I bet it makes a lasting impact in your state.

I think the only way to campaign against him is basically to give him enough rope to hang himself. But you really have to GIVE him the rope. Deliberately and with forethought, and maybe with humor. Leaving it up to people to spot him for what he is won't work. Going head to head and stooping to his level won't work. Reasoning with him won't work, he doesn't care. But, I'd like to think that, if you keep setting it up so people get the chance to see him for what he is, enough people will get it to keep him from winning. After all, people, at least most people, eventually came to see that other guy from western Europe, earlier in the 20th century for the monster he was. But he had to run with it awhile to show his true colors.

If I was Hilary Clinton, I believe I'd ask Bernie Sanders if he'd be willing to be my running mate, if I got the nomination. And I'd ask nice because I'd want him to say "Yes".

Great thoughts and insights, Scout, not only about our current situation but also about the earlier, umm, situation - probably catastrophe would be a better word. Only, I would much prefer that Hillary ask Elizabeth Warren. I love Bernie, but I think Elizabeth has a much more practical head on her shoulders. She is eminently smart and likeable, and doesn't have the baggage Hillary has, not that Hillary has much in actuality, but people perceive that she does, and that's what matters, unfortunately.

Problem is that many watch reality TV and think they know this is Big Papa, gonna take care of all the pesky issues.
