I haven't ever seen it. :)
And... Musical literacy is so, so so unimportant to actually being a good musician, by which I mean, someone who can create good sound.
It's hella interesting, though. My theory is everyone knows the sounds of things but not necessarily the "proper" name for them....
It's weird, I kinda went the opposite way to you. My brother is highly musical, like, just "gets" it, instinctively.... So what did I do? Read and read and read and studied and learnt the "names" or the "concepts" and then reverse-engineered an intuitive understanding.... Typical me.
I'd say you're a much more intuitive musician than me. People like you, the structure is interesting but unneccesary to your grasp of what "music" really is...
People like me need that shit to actually understand what the hell is going on.
There's no wrong or right way, of course, just don't undersell yourself as a musician because you don't have the "book" knowledge behind it. I'm envious of people like you who just "get it" without all that crap.
Ever listened to "jazz math"? Or Thelonious Monk? It sucks arse, because it's trying to apply maths to music.. It's a cautionary tale about theory and music, to me :p
I had to ask myself long and hard if I really would trade all my book knowledge for your intuitive understanding, and the answer is, ten years ago, yes. Absolutely. I would've given my left tit for it. Now, I've simply spent too much time learning it backwards to want to give up my learning. I'd still definitely trade my left tit for it though. Just not my work :p
