News The Word "trigger" Today - Your Take?

When someone really wants to understand what I'm going through, I tell them that x event, object, person, whatever reminds me of a trauma to the extent that I get ill -- dizzy, nauseous, panicky, disoriented. They usually understand that.

I think by this point, we've all heard the words "trigger" or "trigger warning" in some context that m...

Obviously these words mean a lot to PTSD sufferers but I have heard others use these words to describe other things. And then there are the people who like to pretend they have PTSD and want to get any attention they can get. Those are the ones that make me sick to my stomach.

The word trigger is insanely overused and used to describe stressors more often than not. It seems people don't really understand the true meaning of the word trigger.
I like this article that @anthony has posted to describe the difference between triggers and stressors. I almost think it should be featured from time to time so more members would read it:

I think that the word trigger has been changed by younger generation to mean possibly anything they find bad.

A long time ago until I came here I used the word to describe the process I was engaged in and now no longer use the word as the word stressor really applies to me now and is conquered by more and more exposures until I become more skilled in facing my stressors.

I agree with Silver and Anthony on stressor.

Do you still use the word "trigger" to describe stimulus that could give you flashbacks/panic attacks/anxiety, or do you no longer use it to avoid the stigma that's become attached to it?

A "trigger" is something that triggers something, like a flashback and/or, also in my world, an emotional tailspin.

A stressor is what most experience that get miss named as a trigger.

My view of it becoming a fad is in this thread:
Trigger Warnings Becoming A Fad?

Its pointless and evetunally "trigger" wont mean anything. I dont get it. Just like the "fad" called "emo"...whats cool about being sad and depressed? Why would one want to be that? I dont get it.

Personally I use the word "trigger" on here as its easier but its just a word that desrcibes an event. Other words can describe that same event.

@missy meier, I think people like to self diagnois. I think people want to have a name for the stuff thats going on with them so they pick something that sounds like it.

My dad pretended to have PTSD to try to get more VA benefits. I think the people pretending its for benefits or something.

But yes, people do that just like people do all sorts of stuff.

Haven't heard of PTSD being one of them

No but they are out there as my own father did.

He didnt bother reading the PTSD Sourcebook I have either to know what the symptoms to fake. He thought a (singular) nightmare & being a retired Vet would do it.

And he tells me "just put it behind you" and "you are weak minded".

They are out there. I think theres people out there that has or has tried to fake most stuff. My dad just picked PTSD because I have PTSD and he was in Vietnam.
