Recently delt with a armed robbery at the bank where I work....while I was not the one that the gun was pointed at. I still saw & heard the guy who did it....It seemed as if it took forever for the Police and FBI to show up once the panic alarm was set....and of course the stupid robber was long gone & has yet to be found....

While I undertand why all the empathy and concern is directed to the one who actually delt with the robber. I too am scared & hurtting, I want to hide everytime the door opens, but noone cares it is as if I am invisable and don't matter.

I have had panic attacks every day since it happened, have always been prone to them for one reson or the other, but it has gotton worse since the robbery.

I have to deal with it all in silence because appearently I am invisable.:(

I'm sorry mate for this horrible distressing situation. There's no doubt that we don't need to be directly or overtly targeted to experience trauma and its horrible after effects.

Are you seeing a professional for therapy? Are you taking any medications? What about your social support network?
You have every right to reach out and to have your experiences validated. Please think about seeking some help, you deserve it.

no, no thearpy...I thought it would have been offered, but hasn't....When something horrific happens in the schools, help is everywhere, weather or not the person was directly or indirectly affected....but seems as if once you become an adult your expected to become superwoman or superman, and tuff it out.
Can't afford to seek help on my own, so I am left to sort through my fellings on my own as best as I can, which is not working out to well. Have medicine to take, but don't like taking it, from being afraid of becoming dependent on it.
I don't know what to do, it's not that I want anyone to have to go through this, I just wish someone understood.

Yes... support can be a little silly at times, when given, when not.

Have you approached your manager to ask for such counselling from a professional that the bank can send you to at their expense, as it is a work related matter?

That would be the first step IMO. Banks should have such resources available to their staff for those specific events, though otherwise would not be expected otherwise.

Sorry to hear you went through something so horrific. I'm sure it's going to take alot of time for you to get a bit better. Please have hope that you will get better in time. You went through something so shocking. I think it's good that you are seeking out help. This forum will probably help you.

I have panic attacks and keep finding information on how to help those. I was able to read a book about how to help get over them and I applied what it said and got a bit better. Mine was more agoraphobia type. Know your limits and try to push yourself, but not too far. I'm sure it's a scary time for you.

Do you have some activities that you can do to relax? Try to calm yourself as much as you can. Journaling might help. I hope you can find others that have been through something similar. It's hard because sometimes people try to compare stories--however, that doesn't matter--the affect is what matters and you need support and understanding.

have given in and made an apt. with my Primary Care Dr. for Thursday....I don't know how much to tell her, I know she's on time schedule due to other patients, I just know the constant panic ans uneasiness can not continue, but being medicated is not really something I want to do either.....don't even know if I can make it through the apt. without crying.

IvyMillie as far as something relaxing to do, it's usually games that I can 'zone out' and relax, between that and spending time with my cat Reeses. It's just me and her, so she's my world.

It is really important to get help - it is normal for people to have ptsd symptoms in the month or so following a traumatic event. Normally the body makes adjustments and most people don't wind up with full blown PTSD.

In addition to getting help from your doctor you should try to get lots of sleep and exercise and in general pay attention to your health. Do you notice any strong cravings for sweets, be sure to eat nourishing food. Fruits and vegetables and extra protein.

Are you able to find a therapist on your insurance? I know some providers have web sites where you can search for doctors in specific fields. Maybe call and make an appointment on your own?

Sometimes just having someone to talk it through with is helpful. If you don't have a history of trauma, I think you should be hopeful that it will get better. I'm so sorry you weren't given any options from your employer. They really should have done something.

Anthony is right. This is a 'work related' issue. It would be no different if you worked in a factory and got a finger cut off.

I would press the issue. You have rights, and the right to professional care. YOU ARE NOT INVISIBLE!!! That gun could have just as easily turned towards you!! You are affected as well....

sweaky wheel gets the grease, get what you deserve.

sending you strenght and ((((hugs))))

Do not allow yourself to be invisible. I know what that feels like as I have spent too much of my life trying to not make waves or inconvenience anyone. It ends up hurting ourselves much worse Im glad you are seeing your pc and hope you tell her all-and its ok to cry, dont worry about the time-let her refer you to see someone.

Most states have a victims compensation fund for things such as this if the bank manager does not agree to cover promptly. The local prosecuting attorney should be able to give you a number to call and usually get quick approval. Might be covered by workmans compensation fund as well, especially if you need to miss work. I am sorry you had to go through such a frightening experience.. Hugs Im glad Reeses is there for you

had I guess what was a panic attack today that lasted 2 hours or so, couldn't stop shaking, all set off by a remark someone made about the robbery....and didn't sleep at all last night from dreaming about it...Dr's apt is tomorrow, maybe some kind of answer will be found then...

I'm sorry this has happened and that you are suffering so much! You may need meds for a time, probably not forever. Treat this as you would any other illness. Don't let the stigma keep you from getting the help you need.

You are NOT invisible, and your feelings DO matter!
