What you're feeling now, can change and pass... don't let your mind tell you that depression is going to dictate the rest of your life, no matter how it screams at you. I can imagine how frightening it would be to respond to a call and find the victim looked like your spouse. (((Hugs for you if you will accept them)))... take care, and rest.

Hi Tc / The Albatross,

I was a first responder, and also worked in some other parts of the medical maze. It's a funny thing about emotions - it was a tool to be able to turn it off sometimes, to be able to do, or withstand, what was needed. I know I learned how to do that many years before, as a child...

So we learn to turn it off in order to cope. But then, somehow, it stays off. We get numb. And turning it back on can become a whole other thing. And if we do turn it back on, well, then there is the flood, the flood of pain.

Yeah, people expired on the toilet. The general public would be surprised to know how often that happens. All that squeezing, raising the pressure, and then, pow - something blows. Not pretty to go in find someone on the pot, family outside. Bathrooms are too small for a whole crew. Lucky me, I never had to be in the position of trying to pry someone out of there. But a spider in the mouth? That's just weird. Wrong bug, for that location, if you know what I mean.

Anyway, yes, it starts to look like all humanity just sucks. Still, along the way, I still encounter gems. Good people. I value them even more now.

Albatross - as for faith, I envy you. It's a wonderful thing for those who can draw strength from that. A lifesaver for many, meaning in a meaningless world for others. I don't have that faith in a higher power. So I have to make do with the earthly things I have faith in. They are in in short supply sometimes.

Dear Tomcat,
First and foremost, welcome to the forum and thank you for your service. I am a u.s. army veteran that served 8 years and 3 deployments to Iraq. I was a combat medic and eventually was medically retired for service connected disabilities, one of which is PTSD. I understand the grim circumstances surrounding the job and I want you to know that you are not alone in your struggles. If you need anything or just want to talk, feel free anytime. Very Respectfully, Paranoid10.

Hi Tomcat, welcome to the forum.

I am pleased you are with us. There is so much information here, and easy to read which helps those of us with memory/concentration issues.

I thank you for your service, my PTSD was triggered by a car crash and it is thanks to folk like you that I am here. I have made progress thanks to a great T but also due to this forum. members are kind, supportive and understand the impact PTSD has.

I hope you find the friendship that I have found and that the forum helps you to a better place.

((HUGS)) if you accept them
KP

I have to say I am humbled by all of the messages posted here and thank you all very much for your support and understanding. When I think of all of the things that you have been through, I feel like I should just 'suck it up' and deal with it by myself as there are far more people worse off than me. Nevertheless, thank you all so much for your understanding.

Can I also ask one more thing? I have never (nor do I think I am now) been a hyperchondriac. But I am finding since the depression, anxiety and PTSD, I suppose due to being run down....and because I am out of energy and not sleeping, I am constantly getting ill. From one week to the next I have some new bug that drains me even more. I know its trivial, but do others find this happens too? Or should I just keep that one to myself?

I can have that happen also with other ailments I have. I just had a bout with gout but it's ok now. That was caused from my hypocalcemia.

I'm like that, health issues I had previous to PTSD have worsened. I always seem to be at the doctor (in fact I'm there this afternoon ) and I don't go as often as I should. I think it maybe that sometimes we neclect ourselves, can't sleep/eat or eat the wrong things. This leaves our bodies aren't fit to fight off bugs.

I am booked in for a 'well woman' check with the nurse next week and my H said that those words and me were a contradiction of terms :roflmao:.

Take care
KP
