Too complex to treat

I saw my therapist today, coming towards an end of my funded sessions so we naturally started talking abo...

Not an EMDR therapist, but with normal therapists this has happened 3 times. The said I had too much for them to deal with so they couldn't effectively treat me.

All this is really saying is that either T lacks required expertise to treat the specific case or T lacks sufficient time to treat. Ok so people with CPTSD by definition have complex presentations, but is it really right for so many T's to claim expertise is PTSD when they cannot treat Complex Trauma? Perhaps the problem is one how T's acquire training and are described. It seems to me that Consultant Clinical Psychologists are required to handle CPTSD and this adds more years of study and experience to the qualification requirements. Overall the problem is that their are just too few Consultant level Ts

Had my last session today - I am actually going to miss her, however I also feel a bit upset too - open the wounds up, start to treat them and then, thats it, sorry, funding expired, good luck with putting yourself back together again now that we have pulled everything into the open.

@Akhos, I have been there with the NHS, you've come to the end of the allotted, hopefully you've been able to grab something from your time with it and now off you go.

I know it varies on different areas and trusts but did they leave you with any options? I was able to request a 3 month review and at that point I was offered further sessions. It is a shame and not right but you do have to put up a bit of a fight. Are there any local charities you can get in contact with? Mind ofter a lot of services for free or for donations.

I know it's really hard. I felt really lost when I finished my first block of therapy but they could be other avenues to explore.

I am being helped through work, so they have paid for everything so far. We did a psychological assessment at the end of it and it showed that I have actually deterioated since starting EMDR which she said was normal. Thanks - normal is fine, but it doesnt help me much now. Sorry, you are broken even more - Bye, good luck.

I would suggest it would be really worth going to your GP and seeing if the NHS and IAPT can provide anything more. If so far your work have paid that shouldn't limit you getting further help.

Leaving therapy is a hard process, it pulls up many different and conflicting feelings. I am sorry it is feeling so hard for you. There can be more help though.

I am angered just reading the title. I been dropped again and again by public health. I been told similar about the complex part.

I am paying private by credit cards.. third card... holding hope i will get that moment where the eureka happens.

Most insurances will allow a specific number of sessions. Depending on your diagnosis - your therapist can tell them you need more. Depending on the code they’re putting when they bill.
I’ve been working with one therapist and after 6+ years, we are starting to really scratch the surface. She’s done pro bono works with me for probably 4 out of those 6+ years. Granted we do phone sessions because we have both moved, but still.

Sorry about the double post; yes I have been told the same and it made me feel broken and hopeless. Like a lost cause. The truth is I am not a lost cause. I see the progress I’ve made specifically the last 12 months and that gives me hope.

Know these feelings. It seems to me that the NHS doesn't offer a CPTSD service that actually meets the needs of patients who need more long term input for CPTSD. The result is that we are unfairly left in limbo, and being told to go and treat ourselves. The problem is we really need consultant clinical psychologists who are expert in complex trauma - there are so few of them and getting funding to pay for them is even more difficult.
