In my case I'm not sure. The harassment does seem to be ongoing. Just from the surrounding residential neighborhood in California. Even now what I hear is scary: "They put a gun to our head. We have to say these things." "It's crimes against humanity." "It's mafia." "Kill the f---er," etc.

I am sorry you are living in a place where you are subject to such unpleasant shouting.

I hate to add to what probably seems like badgering at this point. But I am still a little confused.

Just so I know I understand what you are experiencing. You have been hearing a person or persons, shouting vile things from an unknown location. Close enough that you feel it may be directed at you, but far off enough that you are unsure as to the exact source of the offending language? Is that correct?

Again I am not trying to badger you. Or be deliberately annoying. Please remember that this is a place where people come from all over the globe, expressing difficult topics through the medium of text. There is no way to read subtleties or nuance. So why I am asking for details, it is not to dredge up more unpleasant feelings for you. But because I am having trouble painting my own mental image of what you are describing.

As others have said here before me. There are very different ways of treating different issues, for good reason. The last thing anyone wants, Is to accidentally make you feel worse. I hope that makes sense.

So, from inside your house, you are overhearing conversations from either outside in the street, or from your neighbours house? From the snippets of the conversations you shared, none of them seem to be directly aimed at you in a threatening way, you're not saying they're being shouted at you, this is stuff you are overhearing (with some difficulty) between other people, outside and away from you? I understand overhearing things like that might be unsettling and might make you nervous to be living in the neighbourhood that you are living in, but I can't see how it's harassment if it's not being directed specifically at you - which from everything you've shared it doesn't seem to be. It's sounds more like you're overhearing things being discussed that have happened or been done to other people. Very unpleasant stuff, yes, but has anything been said that is clearly a direct threat to you?
I think it might be good for you to examine why you're assuming these things are being directed at you. It's seems more that you are tormenting yourself with what you're hearing than the torment actually coming from the outside source.

As to describing it as being 'tortured' in your title, sorry pal, but there are people on this site who have actually been tortured. Hearing people talking shit outside your house doesn't come close.

OK. I can still hear the harassing comments now. It's about 4:40 AM, and they're making it so I can't sleep.

The symptoms I feel are: racing heart, sweat, thoughts of suicide, general sense of panic, feelings of helplessness and betrayal (the police were unwilling to help, as were the lawyers I talked to), a kind of sadness and disgust with the world.

The comments I hear are...
"It's over. You don't have the class for an upper-class career."
"Forever."
"Start over as an engineer." "He's going to kill himself."
"You're a faggot."
"You went against the mafia."
"You need to get help with your misogyny."
"You're alternative."
"You got kicked out."
"Do the tech."
"What a tragedy."
"He's gonna kill himself."
"We're gonna lie."
"Please start over as an engineer."
"Whoops."
"You're not good enough with words."
"You're banned for life."

I know that this is scary and that the voices seem real but from what you describe it sounds like a psychotic disorder, which one, I can't possibly say, you may need an antipsychotic and hopefully then these voices will go away. I'm sorry that you're suffering so much. But I don't think that it's real. Some people who hear voices hear them from objects. These voices are very real. You really must consult with a psychiatrist.

Are you able to identify where/who the comments are coming from this time? I think you said you are living with your mother - can she hear them too?

I have a theory. This is probably going to sound a little absurd. To be totally honest, I am actually a little afraid to post this for fear of coming off a patronizing asshole. I want to apologize now for any offence I may be about to cause.

This sounds alot like the kinds of things people shout at one another through a headset microphone whilst playing an adversarial multi-player video game. Such as "Call of Duty" for example.

Is it possible, that you be hearing one side of a few people trash talking one another?

Again, sorry if is this totally ridiculous and offensive to anyone.

Please switch on a recorder and record what you are hearing. If you get nothing, but the recording device picks up your own voice clearly? Please consider the theory that these are hallucinations.

Please try the earplugs; if the sound is NOT altered with earplugs, then chances are it is your brain misfiring.

If t

...I have hallucinated jazz music and Tv show theme songs during a few periods of intense stress. It was really easy to tell I was hallucinating: I turned the Tv off and the radio off...and voila! Definitely an hallucination.

Too, if it is your brain making the " sound " you can direct it? Well, I did. I conducted my nonexistent jazz band. It was amusing.
