Just a quick reminder that a PODS workshop ‘Trauma and the Body: Dissociation and Somatisation’ is running on Saturday 11 May in Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, UK. It is led by Rob and Carolyn Spring and is suitable for anyone working in the field of traumatic stress, dissociative disorders or sexual abuse recovery, as well as survivors themselves.

Although ‘dissociation’ will be a key component of what we look at during the day, and Carolyn will interweaving lots of theory from research and neuroscience with her own personal story of her battle with traumagenic physical illness, we won’t be focusing exclusively on dissociative disorders such as DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder). The day will be looking at the long-term health impacts of any childhood trauma, including sexual and physical abuse, neglect and other trauma. The day is relevant to all survivors of trauma and people who work with them or support them.

We will be looking at some key areas including:

· the way that trauma impacts our body through the sympathetic nervous system, especially the freeze/dissociation response

· the link between stress/trauma and diabetes, heart disease, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome (ME), rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and irritable bowel syndrome

· chronic (medically-unexplained) pain

· somatisation – when emotions are expressed not in words but through the body

· trauma and memory, including ‘body memories’, and the key role of the hippocampus

· attitudes towards the body (self-harm, shame, obesity, dissociation) and its role in healing

· practical steps we can take to recover from trauma both psychologically and physically

There will be frequent injections of humour and Carolyn will be doing her best to explain some complex science in ways that are not just understandable but also practically applicable, helping us to co-operate better with our bodies in our recovery from trauma. This will be a day full of insights of how to break through the powerlessness that trauma holds us in, in order to move towards both psychological and physical health.

Full details of what is covered on the day can be found at [DLMURL]http://www.pods-online.org.uk/workshop-11may2013.html[/DLMURL] .
