Hi all,

I've haven't been on here in ages. I'm doing well and considering taking a one year work position in the United States (I'm Cdn).

How does getting health insurance work (and, with a pre-existing psychiatric condition) and how does one go about getting a referral to a psychiatrist (I may not need one, but would like to know just in case). I've done some extensive googling, but I still don't really understand how it works. I'm Cdn and have only really dealt with the public system so there just the one system and no issues of being uninsurable. Am I ensurable in the US? Should I just get travel medical coverage and come home if anything serious happens?

Thanks in advance.

The preexisting condition issue is being booted from the system, but not for another few years, so yes, you will probably have to deal with it.

Some types of insurance require referrals for everything, others not so much.

Do you have the option of getting insurance from your employer? Otherwise it's quite expensive.
