It's all wrong. The alt-right is wrong. The alt-left is wrong. Destroying what doesn't belong to you is w...
I don't think so. The recently coined term "alt left" is a misnomer. False equivalence serves no one. Neither antifa (not as horrible and dangerous as it is said to be) nor this "alt left" has continuously and repeatedly incited violence and racism. The antifa group stance is, at its most extreme, by any means necessary. And yet, who are the murderers. Whom are the first to geefully incite violence in peaceful (albeit typically university) cities?

More than ever we need to speak up and speak out against racist bullshit. With Trump practically giving racists a green light to kill we have to be more vocal about no tolerance for racism
Agreed. This is the bottom line. I am unclear on how moderate stances amid the ever escalating chaos serves anyone.

Cripes.

I was traumatized one time when a bird flew into my car's front grille, poor little thing. I just don't understand how someone could do this. And I suppose I don't want to.

OMG, so here's a comment one of my new brother-in-law's friends made in response to news that the name "Robert E. Lee" was going to be removed from a ship: "Think maybe rednecks need to join the protests with guns and start blasting these idiots."

This isn't the first time recently that I've heard something this heinous, but it's the first time I was only 2 degrees of separation from it.

I am scared. Where is this heading?

I was reading yesterday that Robert E Lee, himself, was actually opposed to monuments memorializing the Confederacy, and spoke out against them, after the war.. He thought that they would just encourage the continuation of the feelings and issues that divided the country. He really wanted to see the wounds of the war healed and the country united. I'm not sure he'd be very happy about the current state of affairs and it sounds like there are a lot of people who'd be surprised to find he disagreed with them.

Something that seems to get lost in all this, and maybe part of the problem, is that all these people were, in fact, "people". They were complicated. There were good things about them and bad things about them, just like each of us. I think the fact that Thomas Jefferson owned slaves is bad. I don't think that means Thomas Jefferson was a bad person. He was a person who did bad things. Also good ones. Were he alive today, I seriously doubt he'd think slavery was ok. I don't think Robert E. Lee would be out there protesting with the KKK either. Because, I think, they were both basically decent people who were living with mistaken ideas of their time. I'm not so sure we've "evolved" to the penultimate state of "goodness" yet. Who knows what people will think, if they get the chance to look back on us in a couple hundred years.

Just watched the Tina Fey thing and all I see is someone promoting disordered eating as a method of dealing with the insanity. I guess if I was still eating all that stuff, it might have come across as somewhat funny, but experiencing all I have in regards to a lifetime of struggling with food and emotional eating, it just made me feel like puking.

I'd like to see some groups come together and erect their own damn statues next to the ones everyone wishes to keep/get rid of. It would be even better, in my opinion, if they erected them all right next to the already existing controversial ones. Talk about creating a scene of unity and honoring history as it really went down from all sides. Have MLK, Booker T. Washington, Rosa Parks, Sitting Bull, Squanto, Crazy Horse, Sacajawea, etc. all hanging together, set in stone, for a change.

We all know that could likely never happen, though, as the current requirements, the permits, the application processes, the ownership of the land, the structural/architectural engineer reports, and the required ongoing paper trail to even have it be considered in this so called "land of the free" would be enough to stop it in its tracks before it ever got started. The system seems to make overwhelming ignorance and violence be the most desired and expected path of least resistance, and it seems to be rather hellbent in creating even more of it. Just another day in the long running and poorly directed series of, "As The Stomach Turns".

I don't understand why erasing history is somehow a good thing.

Don't like what a statue represents? Don't add to the plaque denoting why it's a lesson from history. Just rip it down and hide it.

Don't teach people, help them forget. It's the best way to learn.
Much better....

ETA: Mental image I had of a future civil war reenactment featuring all confederate soldiers wearing grey leotards waving trigger warning flags.
