Hello all,
I am currently living with my parents. My ptsd is due to my dads frequent manic phases in which he would lock us in, threaten to kill us etc. I live at home but everytime I see my dad I freeze so I try to avoid him as much as possible. This is usually possible because he sleeps during the day unless he is manic. He is currently manic again and I am absolutely frozen. My brain doesn't work its all cloudy. Its impacting my performance at work, and I really need to do well at work so I can become financially independent enough to move out. Im also feeling jumpy and little things are becoming overwhelming for me. I want to either hurt myself or him. I don't know what to do or how to get out of this. I have friends whose house I can stay at, or I can rent a hotel room for a few days. But even though I KNOW I can do these things I feel unable to. I am feeling so frustrated and hopeless. Any help or support would be appreciated.

This sounds like it’s the number 1 priority.

So what can you do, in the interim until you can move out? I would think staying away as much as possible, even when he’s well bust especially when he’s manic, would be a good idea... and working out a temporary place to stay when he is manic might be a good idea? It would chip away at your savings if you have to pay to stay somewhere, but you’d be able to keep working, so it might be worth it. If you don’t have a friend who would let you crash on their couch, don’t forget to look at youth hostels Hostels International ... most run about $20-$30 a night, so it’s a massive savings over a hotel. If you have a car, truck stops sell $5 car spots, that come along with access to their showers and laundry and recreation rooms.

A few other ideas of places to kill time at, or escape to, that are usually free, safe, have wifi, and in some of them catch a nap or shower. Not a complete list, and locales vary, but just as a start to brainstorming :)

^ & coffee & tea places.

Where the rough guys don't go, the calm intellectuals & mid class just wanting a chill afternoon & moms with small kids go to, and where the customer service people are good judges of character and safety / used to steer trouble away, anyway.
