War With Diabetes

We found out H has diabetes today.

Life changing day. Things need to change in our house and our life's to manage this new illness. And I am now H's supporter. :)

A week ago I was starting to want to change our eating habits and this just confirmed the need. I am glad H is being leveled headed about all this. He is willing to take the medication and change his diet.

I am unsure what else to say. I just need some place to talk about all this up coming change and struggle.

Today he took his medication for the first time. He has always been good with medication. I am very proud of him right now.

I told him that I am so happy he is being so grow up about it. He told me this morning about what he can not eat. He is willing to change his diet and I am so grateful. I told him that and he said "Well, if my father can do it so can I." His father also has diabetes.

I have spent much of my day going through online recipes and a new cookbook I ordered. Trying to find healthy, vegetable packed things that H will eat. So far I am having good luck. I have found 8 things that I am going to try in the next week. They are different styles of food to. None of it seems boring or dull.

Ayesha, do they have that monitor where you can prick yourself in, I believe, the palm instead? Or can the one he has do it? The fingertips are very sensitive. I can't imagine doing that since I can't even stand to get my finger pricked for an iron test.

When my mom's diet and exercise were good, her need for insulin went down. For awhile she didn't need it at all. It did take her some time to get use to what she could and could not eat to stablize her sugar levels. Definitely all a balance.

You sound like a great supporter. :)

If you can get him to do the glucose test a few times, he will get used to it. My mom did after just a few tests and then it was ok. The good thing is that diabetes can be managed with diet and medication, and since he is on board, that is good :)

There are a lot of tastey things you guys can eat. Just remember, protein and carbs together, and carbs should be whole grain when possible.

The blood sugar monitors do take some getting used to. I test from the sides of my fingers, it's less painful. Over time he'll get a few little callouses from the finger pokes, then it won't hurt at all.

Congrats on finding so many new recipes to try! If your hubby has a sweet tooth, there's some really good low-carb candies out there too.

So a few important things happened today.

H told his father, who got a bit emotional hearing it. H told his father not to tell his mother, but his father will "within 24 hours" H said. We will probably be getting a call in the middle of the night too.

H told me that he will do the glucose testing. But I have to do it for him. He wont be able to prick his finger and will need my help. Well, at least he's willing to do it.
