Warning About Lingering In Chatroom

Just wanted to clear up my understanding on this or lack there of...

I log in to chat but not the main chat room (I find it a bit overwhelming) - I meet another member and have a private chat. So if I don't log into the main chat room - is this considered lingering because I am still technically logged in?

Really hope not because this is not my intention.

By lingering, we mean those who log in and just sit there reading what others are saying, and never joining in. As well as those who we find occasionally just join the forum for the use of the chat room.

Meeting and having private chats with a choice few is fine, your active on the forum and choosing to use the chat room in a way that is comfortable for you.

Most members do not have to worry at all, this was just a warning from Anthony, to those few who linger for hours on end, and not posting on the open forum.

Thanks for this Anthony I had noticed this happening & yes it does give you a creepy feeling having people just reading messages.
Kat9 please don't worry, you will be very welcome in Chat we just all need to comply to the rules in there.

The best part of the chat system, is that users can self moderate it and report lurking, banning lurkers immediately, and when reported, will give staff time to review the issue.

Anthony,

First, as a former Control Systems Engineer and Licensed Social Worker with C-PTSD, this is a fabulously safe community you, and other half, have worked so passionately to establish. I treasure finding it.

Second, since I have been absurdly stuck alone in the ER/ICU without a voice for over nine weeks, with only a handheld iTouch, I am not able to chat because I of course have no flash. Is there a way to put a message in there that a few private conversations with others, where I don't have to try to read and follow as many posts as normal threads have, would be extremely welcomed. And would do me a world of good as I have another procedure upcoming? I get little wifi access and this elongated stay, unlike most others, is truly frying my last nerve.

I completely understand if it is not feasible, but any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Honest!

Respectfully posed,
Alex

Hi Icon,

Unfortunately, there is little I can do about flash compatibility for mobile devices, nor can I extract the content from flash to HTML for mobile browser viewing.

There is a help video on the chatroom in the help video forum, which shows members how to give more control over viewing the conversations, creating their own rooms, inviting others out privately, etc etc... scrolling windows don't have to be an issue if you watch that video, as the options already exist in chat for members to read at their pace, how to respond to specific people, whisper, etc.

Sorry to hear about your hospital visit... can't stand them myself.

Take care,

Anthony

I think every "regular" makes this mistake of stepping away from the computer without logging out. I know I do. I keep it open to chat while working and then get pulled away by a phone call or a kid and leave my computer open. I can't think of a regular who doesn't do this. It would be a shame to start banning chatroom regulars. But it is making me take a second thought about using it.

I agree with SC. I have to repeatedly step away from the computer on Thursdays & Fridays. These are my chore days. I step away to shift laundry, clean a bathroom, dust, vacuum or fold a basket of laundry. I'm still reading but only reply in between tasks. I thought it would be more disruptive to come in and out of the Chat over and over. Although, I've been trying to get the bulk of my chores done before I come in to minimize my gaps in the conversation.

There is a rule about lingering within the chatroom with little participation within the forum itself.

This was mostly directed at people who were lurking in the chat room but had little or no forum posts. People who had not introduced themselves on the forum, or who were not posting on the forum at all, yet were lingering in the chat room. There are members who were uncomfortable, and understandably so, with the fact that it appeared there were members just lurking in the chat room for hours at a time, watching everything that was written but had never introduced themselves or participated on the forum. The chat room is there for use by active members of the forum. If you are a regular, active, participating member of the forum, please don't read more into this reminder/warning than needs to be.

Okay, will do. Thanks for the clarification, Catjudo. It just occurred to me that this behavior might be happening on the flip-side (when i'm snoozing). I was being timezone-centric. lol.
