Reclusive, I think you hit the nail on the head! He has always been 'overly obliged' to his own family - to the point of giving them my hard earned money because they wanted a new car! I don't even drive a new car. The point is, he has come from a psychologically abusive and emotionally manipulative family also and he has always felt 'overly obliged' at putting them before 'anyone' else.
I think ultimately with my 'own family', I will take Big Bear's advice and change our phone numbers. This seems like a sensible and blatantly obvious solution to my problem. Thanks Big Bear.
