Daz, you hang tough brother.

I also bet some of those Nam guys will say they are glad they did not have to fight in Afghanistan or Iraq.
As Sarg said, the door to door is the shits. The tunnel rats would agree as well. Not much difference in my eyes.

Being exposed to warriors from WWII to the present one strange thing I noticed that was common to each group of Veterans. The war of others was worse than ours.

I recall meeting a Korean War vet back in the late 60's and he said " you boys had a lot worse that we did at least we knew who we were fighting". Another Marine who defended the Chosin Reservoir said " We didn't have it half as bad as the WWII guys did". Point is I think that we reference or experiences through those of other warriors. Myself, well we had our own "shit sandwich" in Nam but these guy's over in the sandbox have a whole lot of crap to deal with that we never had. Not only are they being deployed multiple times, these career soldiers still have to manage families and civilian careers while dodging the IED's. I can't imagine having to log on to a computer and see the family and deal with the usual day to day stuff that goes down and get back to the AOR in the morning. You guy's have it tough! Your families have it tough! We'll see down the road just how tough it was for the children. God Knows!

Mail twice a month on a good month was about it back in the day. No matter how we slice and dice it - WAR SUCKS! Yet when called good men/women put there lives on hold to defend those at home. Some make the ultimate sacrifice, others wear their wounds for a lifetime as a reminder and others suffer the unseen wounds of PTSD/TBI. We were told to "harden the f*ck up" and we did as ordered and in the end many of us probably did more harm to those we loved than the enemy. WTF!

Thank you all for doing for those who could not and those who would not.

Was in the sally bash this morning, it is sited here on the patch and supports the families.

I have been going into this place since 1987. I have known the Salvation officers who run it for years.

Today Katharina mentioned that they are closing in March. (next month) They had been asked by the German Salvation Army to stay on and help out here with Brit Vets and the Local German populace aswell. Well Not only are they closing in March but they are off back to blighty.

Realy dumb thing is, the regiments that are quatered here in Detmold, some are off on tour in Okt. which means there will be next to no welfare support for the families. The Hive and SSAFA here are only manned a couple of hrs for a couple of days?

What the f*ck are they thinking.

The cafe is being closed so there is also no where for families to meet up and chat and have a tea. But not only is it here where it is happening, the Salvation Army will cease to work with the Brit Military once BAOR has closed down.

The Salvation Army has been working with the British Military since the BOER War (1880`s) and now gets pushed aside thanks to the F*cking "None Profit" bullshit Organisation who wants everything. NAAFI has all cafe`s and restaurants now.

The British Military, with close down in BFG will have nowhere to go for a sympathetic ear and a reasuring cuppa in the future.

It's snowing here in the Pacific Northwest and every time it does everyone loses their minds. It's a panic like the world is going to end and people lose all common sense they may have had before the first flake fell.

I sat at my desk doing my job while people nearly cried about how they would get home. The company booked hotel rooms for everyone closing and opening. A woman bitched about how she wanted a hotel even though she lives a mile away, doesn't have a car, and doesn't want to be out in this weather. Seriously? There's this f*cking thing called "winter" where sometimes it f*cking snows. You can't say you didn't think this would ever happen.

I left a nearly empty office last night and drove home which usually takes just under 30 minutes. I made it home in 45, passing vehicles in ditches lol.

Now my girlfriend decides to tell me this morning she doesn't have any money left or gas to get to work and is also bitching about the snow. I swear no one plans for shit anymore.

I always laugh at the deep south when it snows down there. Schools close, Emergency Management declares an emergency, no one goes to work or they crash trying to get there, it's ridiculous. Two inches of snow.

This happened the day after I moved back to flag...

Made me feel like I was really home then.

Old 4th Armd stomping ground.

Angle,

No I did not realize we were talking the 4th as being a Brit outfit since it was not qualified by country of origin. But I did some research and found this, so my memory as a kid was not far off: http://www.usarmygermany.com/Sont.h...m/units/4th Armd Div/USAREUR_4th Armd Div.htm

The 4th AD was reactivated after WWII at Ft Hood, Texas, becoming part of the overall USAREUR during the Cold War. I just remember a sign in one of the pictures my father took when we visited some of the German cities. I may have it in the closet I hate to open because of all the memories. I was a military nut even when I was a kid when we lived in Europe, I wanted an assignment to Germany instead of 'Nam but I knew that was impossible then.

Didn't mean to offend.

Daz, I can almost guarantee you that all the Nam veterans on this site will agree with me when I say that 'Nobody has it worse than anybody else'. I used to say that all the time early on. I did not think I had a right to call myself a veteran as I was not in the jungle fighting people in black pajamas.

PTSD does not differentiate because of the conflict you fought in. PTSD is PTSD and the symptoms are pretty much the same for a guy that fought in WWII, Vietnam, Northern Ireland, Iraq, or Afghanistan, the only difference is our personal nightmares.

I also bet some of those Nam guys will say they are glad they did not have to fight in Afghanistan or Iraq.

Have seen and read many a cock fight over this issue. It is not worth the energy. Blood and tears all look the same to me.

Ditto: any new person comes into the therapy group I attend that starts to play the my-combat-wounds-are-bigger-than-yours game usually don't last too long. We're there to help each other, not to boast unless it is for fun. We all have pain and we all know some of us are worse at times than the others.

Angle,........................Didn't mean to offend.

:DYou lost me there Vik my man, Not sure what thread or post you were reading, but I didn`t see or read anything remotely offending cocker. :D

I know what you mean about old memories though. I was a pad brat aswell, and allthough I was born in the UK I have only ever lived 6 years there, the rest has allways been in Germany.

I was so chuffed when I got my first posting and it said BAOR. All I could say to people in blighty at the time was "Going Home"

But the realy wierd thing is, I feel English but cat live in the UK, I just love Germany but am not German.

It is like I belong and fit in to neither, Some days it makes me sad.:(

Probably one of the reasons I live out in the sticks and make my own

I think it's terrible that there is going to be next to mo welfare facilities for the families left behind. I have seen guys posted in to the regiment with their wifes and families in tow just to leave them for a six month tour two weeks later.

Your misses and kids are in a foreighn country with few or no friends whilst we bugger off and leave them. I don't think the British Military have ever really supported the families. It's all been down to those few individuals within the NAAFI, SSAFA HIVE etc that make the difference. There has never really been any proper backing by the government, no funding put in place to these organisations help those that need it.

Swept under the carpet springs to mind.

Yep please re check my post on Vietnam guys as ere is no cock fight going on at all and if it came across that way it really wasn't my intention. :-) :-) but I have read everyone else posts and I guess it's true, we have all had our own shit sandwiches and each of us has had to munch it down the best way we can. This place is certainly helping me with digesting the aftertaste. I wish I had stumbled across it a few years ago. Thanks chaps!!!

Although the wives did make a cracking military choir.
