I'm too lazy to google atm.

Does snowday mean school's out because of snow or something because that'd be weird..?

Yep. Here in the states people freak when there are two flakes falling from the sky. Well, if you're anywhere south of the northernmost parts of the lower 48. Then there is a run on toilet paper, milk, eggs, and bread. If they're calling for snow, these shelves in the supermarket are wiped clean. I'm tellin' ya, the weather forecasters are getting kickbacks from food producers! It really does take a substantial snowfall for anyone in my area to be snowed in for more than a day though.

it means that school is out because the school authorities have deemed the road conditions too hazardous for the buses.

But why would you shut the schools because of snow that's an odd thing to do

Don't you have those huge truck-thingys with the huge thing on the front to move the snow out of the road

if the road conditions are too hazardous because of the snow, and the buses can't run, then the kids cannot get to school, so the school closes for the safety of the children.

You'd be amazed at the chaos a couple of flakes of snow can cause to people who aren't used to snow.

It doesn't take many people who have the wrong tyres on their car, or who aren't used to driving on snow and ice to block the roads for everyone else with their crashes and their getting stuck.

Also a lot of places which don't get lots of snow and every winter, it's cheaper for the councils etc to have chaos for the people who pay their wages, than it is to spend money on snow clearing tackle -

especially when they can spend that money on "fact finding visists" to the Seyschelles or bahamas...

yes they do, but they have to get the main roads cleared first. It is usally the conditons of the secondary roads and the out lying roads that don't get cleared before the busses run that causes the schools to close

If there's a lot of snow here the teachers are more like "If you're nice we'll go out and play at the end of the day" and out "snowdays" are days where we spend all day outside in the snow with skis or sledges. Unless it's colder than -30, then kids without proper clothing could, in the worst case scenario, freeze to death.

@RussH Yeah, I get that... but do you get that much snow and ice over there? Or what's it like? I'm kinda confused.
Oh wait you probably don't have many of those snow-truck-things (what do you call them?) compared to what we have. Usually they drive around everywhere all winter, and everyone with a tractor will also drive around.

@Anarchy But how. I have serious trouble understanding this, lol. Snowflakes are just water looking a lot cooler and it won't make you as wet unless it's a warm winter with -5 to -10 or something like that and you can play in it, it's not like you're gonna die from two inches or snow

The snow we get here in Seattle is like slush and ice. My favorite is when we get freezing rain over soft powdery snow. It's like walking through creme brulee.

If you want to kill some time go to youtube and search for "Seattle Snow" and voile schadenfreude.

Its crazy, people in southern states don't know how to drive in the snow AT ALL. I remember one snowstorm down in Atlanta I think it was where people were stranded on the highway because traffic just stopped. People were in their cars overnight, many ran out of gas.

Heck, even the Philadelphia (Pennsylvania) airport is notorious for shutting down due to RAIN! I've flown through there 3 times and now I will do anything in my power to not get a connecting flight thru Philly because the rain delays are insane!

You've gotta remember that its not just a matter of having snow equipment for clearing the roads, they also take into account the fact that storms in certain states are more dangerous simply because nobody knows how to drive in such weather conditions.
