When A Beloved Animal Dies

I just heard from a close friend that one of their cats died tonight. It was very sudden, don't know if it was a heart attack or aneurysm or what. They rushed him to the vet after he got violently ill today, our vet also, who couldn't do anything for him, and we trust our vet completely. He was a fairly young cat. Very sweet and cuddly. I am just so crushed. We catsat for him and their other cat many times while our friends would go out of town. I just can't believe it. I mean, I've been through many pet deaths, but this one was so sudden and unexpected, whereas all the others were foreseen within a couple or few days, during which we could offer the comfort of home, morphine, etc. This is just such a sad end to a very bad day.

So sorry to hear that. I lost my 4 year old cat, Daisy, not long ago. After over a month of vet visits to find out what was causing her rapidly increasing skin problems, I finally made the decision to have her put down at the end of February. Tough, tough day.

It is never easy, whether you know it's coming or not. You are losing a family member.:(

Cuddle your other animals, they are always the best help to get past this kind of thing.

I'm so sorry for you. I lost my 3 month old puppy 3 or 4 years ago, and it cut me up so much I still blame myself for being a bad mummy to her and not keeping her safe. I have her mummy and I had another little and got my dog that I have now so I have the mum and her son and are about to get his daughter in 5 weeks so I will have a family of three generations.

I hope you feel a little better soon, I'm so sorry

Yes, it's hard when a pet dies. I've never lost one in a sudden traumatic manner, the ones who I've lost have been as you said, after lengthy illnesses/old age, some natural deaths, others euthanasia.

It sounds like one of those situations that was "in God's hands" so to speak, nothing anyone could have done. Life happens, and death is a part of life. Still doesn't make it easy to take, I know. So sorry this loss happened, hope you can feel better about it soon.

Everyone deals with it differently. When my first dog died, I cried for about 3 months, especially when I came home to an empty house. But he was almost 15, I knew it was coming for a while ... and I was still devestated. Then I got a new puppy, and it really helped.

I hope this doesn't sound callous or shallow or something ... but for me, when I lose one now, i don't wait ... I get a new puppy ASAP. The loss of the old one still hurts, but the new life in the house seems to help me so much, takes my focus off the pain and gives me a lot of joy. Plus on a purely pragmatic level, I always get young puppies, 6-8 weeks, so there is a lot of hands-on to keep me busy around the clock - accidents to clean up, meals to prepare, all of the things that get chewed up and destroyed that shouldn't have been to clean up, LOL.

I have 2 dogs right now ... when my old guy goes, I will get another one ASAP.

I am so sorry. It is so hard when a furry family member dies. I take comfort from the poem The Rainbow Bridge. I know I will meet me pets again.

@MT Johnny. Not callous at all. I have 2 dogs. My old boy was ill and I knew I couldn't be without a dog so we rescued Saffi. She gave my old boy a new lease of life and he lived another 4 years. The she was upset so again we rescued another dog Max. Saffi is 13 this year, Max will be 8. I know I will have to get Max a new friend when Saffi dies. Thankfully both dogs are full of life and in great health.

@Rumors I'm right there with you on that one.

We lost our beloved cat poppy over the summer. He had cancer. Had him for 15 yrs. I rescued him when he was 4 mths old from a kid that I worked with. He didn't want him anymore and was going to throw him in the woods. Poppy was a sweet, gentle soul. Never once did he bit or scratch ANYONE. Even my daughter when she was a baby pulled his tail. He would just meow and leave the room.

It's kinda funny up until his death when he would see my daughter (now 12). He would get up, Meow and leave the room. I guess he never forgot. Funny.

There's a cat that lives 2 doors down from us and when Poppy was alive he'd come over and poppy would chase him away. After poppies death it took him about 3 days to realize it was safe to come in. He now lives at my mother's. I joke that instead of getting a new cat, she swiped the one from down the street.

We nicknamed him "Georgie" and sadly he's not doing well. He's almost 17 yrs. He struggles everyday to breathe and he looks simply miserable. His original owners took him to the vet and he was given a cortisone and anti-biotic shot. Then they brought him back to my moms asking if he could stay with her because he needs a quiet, stress free environment. Neighbors have other cat. Next step is to do an x-ray but they're afraid it could show cancer.

It's so sad to see him struggle to breathe. He's a very sweet cat. I don't even want to pet him at this point because when you do he starts to purr and makes this horrible gurgling sound. Sadly, I think he is dying.
