When Beta Blockers Don't Work....

So when you think your mind is coping well but your body is telling you otherwise.
I can't shut down and hide away from the world, there's to much responsibility - even though I'd like to!

For my crippling IBS, I've been put on 10mg Amitriptyline but I think it's put my depression and anxiety through the roof. I mean I can usually handle it all but the last few days have been hell.
Beta blockers used to be a god send for the physical symptoms but I'm still getting horrid chest paints and my throat dries out.

Has anyone else had this?

I have family with IBS and crohn's-colitis.
It sounds like they have given you something for the IBS because they feel like it is heavily related to stress, depression etc. I have tried amitriptyline for my anxiety in the past, but I am highly allergic to it (and it did exasperate my symptoms as well)

There are things used to treat IBS but have crummy side effects, here they commonly start with prednisone (which is a steroid. It works great, but the side effects to me just aren't worth it).
Have you tried lifestyle changes to help? (more fiber in your diet, increased exercise, yoga, meditation etc)
Have you talked to your doctor about trying something else out? There are quite a few meds directly geared for IBS that might be worth looking into.

(just a side note, dry mouth is a very common side effect of medications. With colder weather coming on, it's usually good to put a humidifier in the house to help with the overall dryness in the air)

I used to have IBS, it gave me so much anxiety. I felt I couldn't trust my body . I'm not sure if you have done the dietary approach, but it worked for me.
I cut out dairy, sugar, and gluten. Basically I ate protein, starches like rice potatoes, oatmeal, and when it was bad, i steamed my veggies and avoided raw fruit.
Slowly I added back rye bread, yoghurt, and now I eat everything but try not to eat too much wheat or baked goods. Haven't had a bout in years (except a terrible bacterial infection from Guatemala, but that was a whole other story)
