Which Type Of Therapy?

Hi everyone,

I was finally, officially diagnosed, in around May 2013 with PTSD. The psychologist said that it was PTSD, but it was complex. By this, I am assuming that she meant Complex PTSD. My next appointment with this psychologist was cancelled as she left he position. It wasn't until the September/October that I was given 2 further appointments with another Psychologist, who was also leaving and told me there was no Psychologist at that time to replace him. He put me on the waiting list for EMDR Therapy. I now have an appointment (over 2 years later) with another Psychologist, on Monday. Apparently, this waiting and changing from one Psychologist to another is the norm in our NHS area due to cuts in government funding.

What I want to know is,what therapy gives the best results? I have decided not to undertake the EMDR Therapy so would like to know if any one has any information or experience of any other therapy that, statistically, has good results,

thankyou,

Louisa

Always learning here. Finding a good competent Therapist seems the hardest and best path. They are all mostly nice people, but can be useless (or worse) if not experienced in therapy for your particular background trauma. And of course all the info and connections here.

I would say it is a combination of a good trauma therapist, as not every clinical psychologist is trained in trauma, and a good method or multiple methods used by one therapist. My therapy is mainly somatic experiencing and ego state therapy, and both methods are sublime imho. I am a real advocate for somatic experiencing as it works with the body and the body remembers everything that your cognitive mind may not remember. This has been life saving for me as I did not remember the worst stuff; without this method I would still not know why I have ptsd. I am not familiar with statistics on methods.

I have had a variety put together at different times, based I where I was at in the process.

CBT, exposure, narrative, emotionally focused/attachment(I have attachment problems) and now we are using EMDR.

Unfortunately, you are working with the nhs system, and it seems like you will only have a certain number of visits. So it's hard to suggest a path, as I have not been limited by time.

I don't know much about statistics etc, but aside from EMDR my therapist uses somatic therapy, somatic experiencing and ego state therapy. Possibly others too, but they seem to be the main ones. I've found these combined to be really helpful. Intense, but I made sure I found a therapist who specialises in trauma and has worked in the field for many years. I'm also about to start trauma sensitive yoga therapy, a yoga program developed specifically for trauma survivors.
