Why didn’t they tell me my diagnosis?

Saw this mentioned in another thread, as it was my experience too, thought I'd start a thread. Found out my dx was in my record years before anyone decided to tell *me*. Then when I was told, it was off-handedly. Never explained the real..nonTV/movie..life living with dx. When it dawned on me, this wasn't going away, got a T & demanded he fix it! Now! Luckily, he is very patient with a sense of humor. How did you find out?

I wasn’t told one of mine, either.

It was slapped on me during a 4 day hospital stay for a suicide attempt. I found out about it 2 years later.

I was never in the psych ward.

I was never NOT under the influence of drugs the entire time there.

I don’t see it as valid because there’s no way I’d meet all diagnostic criteria without them talking to me in a coherent manner.

I need to fight it at some point, but don’t have the energy right now.

May I ask if anyone ever took the time to explain what it meant, Eve? Or did they just leave you on your own to figure it out?

My care has never been coordinated well enough for me to have a diagnosis follow me anywhere. My first psychiatrist used to change my diagnosis slightly at every appointment, but she did give me a print out with what they happened to be that day. My therapist at the time explained my PTSD diagnosis before it just showed up on my psychiatrist's appointment summary but none of the other ones that swapped out regularly were ever really explained.
