Can't say if the Navy has gone soft. They had generating misery out of nothing pretty down pat. Then the bad design of any particular ship gave it a nice personalized sheen of misery on top. Diesel showers, shit in the fuel tanks, diesel fuel spitting fire hoses. 50 year old weapons. All in good fun. Until it killed you.
