Yeah that sucks. The friend I mention above had to come to class when my professor brought in her little girl. She was petrified the whole time. How do you deal with that? I don't know. I have dealt with lots of things in class that have made me want to leave, but nothing as consistent (except for some human-shaped scum problems in the past) as a service dog that would always be in class with someone.

Of course, I have been able to take my dog with me to three of my classes and to work regularly, so I am already spoiled by my school.

Muprhy I so really get your jist......... may i ask if you have ever run across a service dog in an environment that made you feel uncomfortable.......

I've never been in a prolonged situation with one, but even passing someone in the mall, or a person in the store with a guide dog givese that clammy anxious feeling. I don't know how I would handle it having to encounter one on a regular basis.

I read an article earlier today about cats passing the California tests for service dogs. When my dad was living with me, he used to let me take his dog out whenever I wanted and I got out a lot more often. For some reason, no one I was living with could check the mail except me and the only way I could do it was by taking his dog with me. There are a lot of times I really miss having her around because she made me feel so safe, especially at night, just having her in the house. My cats are good company and help me a lot, too, but there's just something about a dog - y'know?

For the record and because I am me ..I am going to reach out to the IRS on ruling on chinchillas as service animals Tuesday. I will keep you informed Ms. A... They luv me at IRS........ (They always chuckle:laugh: on phone when they pull up my account via SS # as I found out they do keep a log of all your contacts with them, Hey at least I can make them Giggle.......... before they audit me ) ........ I checked supplemental IRS booklets and rulings.... From a non CPA point of view Chinchillas could be in..... FTR BTW www.chinchillarescue.org/ in N Cal...

Actually, service chinchillas would be impossible as they are very prone to dying in uncontrolled environments. : ( 75 degree weather and up will kill them. Lots of different kinds of wood will kill them. Lots of different foods will kill them. They are funny and fragile little creatures, at least domestic ones.

It depends on where you live, Marissa. You would have to contact your local regulatory people. To find out who they are, I'd try the humane society and see if they had the number or a local vet.

I don't look at disabilities as different, whether they are emotional or physical, they are still disabilities. Anything that impairs an individual's ability to function in the course of normal day-to-day activities takes away from their quality of life. If a service dog enables a person to improve the quality of their daily life, whether for disabilities seen or unseen, then the animal is invaluable and necessary.

Service dogs are highly trained and the owner must be responsible to evaluate the environments where they bring their dog. The owner must be responsible to make sure their service dog is not creating a dis-service to others. They must be under your control at all times, impeccably behaved and groomed.

I lost my service dog and hence some of my freedom. But I also have learned a lot about how other people view a service dog and it has been nothing but favorable. I didn't think that many people noticed, but when they see me without him, they ask about him. More than a few eyes have teared up when I tell them he died. Not only did he enrich my life and help me, he seemed to have that affect on many others.
