The Herb & Supplement Thread

I'm a big fan of natural solutions to PTSD. I spent years on antidepressants, antipsychotics, benzos - pretty much every tool in the psychiatrist's sample bin, I tried it. All they did was make me gain weight, sleep, drink heavily, deteriorate physically, and avoid dealing with my issues. Not to say that psych meds aren't good! They just aren't good for me!

I've spent the last 2 years experimenting with herbs and supplements and thought I'd document the ones I've tried and what I found to work and what not to work. Maybe someone out there is where I once was, looking for alternatives, and they are searching the internet for ways to cope with their PTSD naturally. I want to make it easy for that intrepid soul: here be natural alternatives (herbs, supplements) to possibly alleviate some of your PTSD symptoms! (Note: these are my personal opinions and experiences, results may vary per individual)

Holy Basil: I love this stuff. It lowers blood pressure, lowers cortisol, relaxes the whole body and mind. It's like a natural Xanax + mood stabilizer for me. I don't really have anything bad to say about this stuff. It gives me energy without the edge of caffeine. Recommended by the University of Maryland Medical Center as a first-line treatment for PTSD. I take the Organic India 300mg supplement form as well as their tea.

L-theanine: Excellent for anxiety. My go-to in a panic attack - another one I can't really think of any downsides. I prefer to drink it in decaf green tea as the supplement form can be a bit overpowering (confusion, drowsiness).

Zinc:
The calming mineral, and it does just that. Most Americans are zinc-deficient due to our poor diets, so it can't hurt. I take a low dose (10 mg 2x day) and it does the trick. I'm also very physically active, which can apparently deplete zinc. For some reason, supplement companies like to package zinc in 50mg doses, which is above the daily limit and can have some funky side effects. Buyer beware! :wideeyed:

Rhodiola Rosea: Another great calming herb that gave energy akin to holy basil. It gave me some gastrointestinal issues, so I stopped taking it, but that's not to say you shouldn't give it a shot. I really enjoyed the feeling it produced and would have kept taking it if it weren't for the stomach problems.

Ashwaghanda: Similar to rhodiola rosea and holy basil, but this one made me sweat profusely (also my libido shot through the roof, and I already have a high libido). If it weren't for those side effects, I would also have kept taking this one.

Vitamin D3: I isolate and stay indoors, which means not a lot of sunshine, which means depression. Vitamin D3 helps in those really dark times. I have a strange allergic reaction to the supplements which actually increases my anxiety and gives me a runny nose, so I take a low dose (400 iu) only when things are desperately dark. It does the trick, and with my other herbs (holy basil, l-theanine) I can manage that anxiety spike.

Chamomile: This stuff is amazing for sleep and anxiety. Unfortunately, it also works similarly to a benzo and screws with your GABA receptors. I'm no doctor of science, but that's what I'm trying to avoid! I only drink this stuff in extreme emergencies. Too much and it defeats the purpose.

I've had the best results with the above so far. Others I've tried that actually did the opposite of what I wanted:

Vitamin B12: Increases energy (good for depression), but my anxiety shot through the roof! That's wack, B.

Skullcap: Amazing at first for anxiety, but too powerful. Confusion and sweats. Also jacked up my libido. And apparently it acts like a benzo on the brain <--trying to avoid this! :stop:

Niacin: This stuff is a boss for depression, but it made me anxious as hell, and the skin flushing was not worth it. Bill W. - founder of AA - loved his niacin. I tried it because I'm a recovering alcoholic, but it didn't take for me.

Ginseng: Another one that's awesome for depression as well as energy, but sent me into fits of rage!

St. John's Wort: Anxiety, anxiety, anxiety. Did not like this stuff at all.

Ginkgo: Haven't taken it consistently enough to notice any marked difference. Will possibly revisit in the future if the need arises. Apparently good for focus and memory.

I'll add more as I try or think of them. I encourage others who have taken natural remedies to share their experiences as well, as I'm only one guinea pig and don't represent the whole PTSD population. Until then, I hope everyone finds what works for them on their healing journey!

@CrowFeather I forgot about magnesium! Great stuff for anxiety - and sleep!

Unfortunately, magnesium supplements give me tremors for some reason. It may be because I was taking magnesium taurate. I've read the body processes chelated variants differently.

But yes, I'd definitely put magnesium high up on my recommendations, thanks! I'll have to try those apricot seeds.

@rascal thank you for this thread! It is wonderful.

Do you have any experience with Taurine? I tried the L-Theanine for anxiety but even 2 capsules 3x's a day wasn't enough to calm me. I took it back to the store. Manager gave me several samples of the Taurine. She said to take it once a day (500mg).

Said it might take time to feel it. I don't feel any calmer but at this point I'll try anything.

@Heather I've had taurine in those recovery protein shakes they make for bodybuilders as an active ingredient, but I can't say I've had any isolated experience with it. It's usually promoted as a workout recovery supplement since it works on the cardiovascular system, but it also seems to work on the central nervous system as an anxiolytic (according to a quick Wikipedia). You've piqued my interest, I'll have to give it a go. Keep me posted!

Sorry to hear about the l-theanine not working, though. I use it as a little extra push when I need it if my big hitters (holy basil mostly) aren't doing it for me completely.

@Heather Anxiolytic = anti-anxiety

I take holy basil 300mg twice a day. Sometimes I drink the tea if I'm having an extra rough day. It usually takes anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes to fully kick in.

When I first started taking it, it was a revelation. I went from incredibly hypervigilant, tense to relaxed, conversational. Like I was my old self again. Now it's not quite as powerful or mind-blowing, but I won't be caught dead without it. I'm a different person. Well, that plus therapy.

If anything, it really brings me into the present moment for just enough to get my bearings. I still have anxiety and I still isolate, but holy moly is it more manageable. I'm making gains slowly but surely with it. I can actually talk to my family without exploding and running away. This is huge for me. Heck, I can type this to you without running away from the internet. Good stuff.

Taurine is essential for cats but modern food doesn't always account for that. My guys are on really great food (raw rabbit & kangaroo) but the extra Taurine helps their coats. It's not the easiest thing to metabolize but I figure a little more is good. You can Google all the feline health benefits or I'd be typing all night ;)

I don't know if this counts -- but Celestial Seasonings has a herbal tea blend called Dragon Tamer. I do not know what the heck they put in it. It's like natural Xanax and also doesn't taste bad. A pot of this tea has calmed me silly during some of my most stressful sev-1 cases at my previous place of work.

I haven't drunk this tea in years. I might want to try again.

Taurine for cats. If your cat does not get enough taurine, it will damage their eyesight and a severe deficiency will cause them to go blind. The heart muscles will weaken and it can cause kidney issues. Cats get taurine from the heart and smaller amounts from the tounges of prey animals. Please consider supplementing your cats diet with taurine powder or by feeding raw animal heart. Just so you know, you can not over do it.

Copper~ I have a copper deficiency but this is one not many people know about. Copper is needed to absorb iron. However, zinc and copper do not play nice with each other. Zinc blocks the absorption of copper. If you are taking zinc supplements, consider taking copper, and make sure you take one in the morning and the other at night so they don't interact.

Probiotics~ It has been proven that gut bacteria affects mental health. Yeast overgrowth and a lack of good bacteria can cause or increase anxiety and in extreme cases, psychosis.

B12~ B12 is another one that affects mental health if there is a deficiency. B12 helps is very important for energy during the day and sleep at night.

I am currently experimenting with various herbal teas such as Nettle for its rich vitamin content and post-panic attack, emotional upset recovery capabilities. Lemon Balm for it's anti-anxiety (I am not feeling very positive about that yet) and Mallow Root for digestive health.
