Dog In Crate 12 Hours, Is This Cruel?

Think the puppy cam is so important, because if your dog did get distressed, you would be able to act on it, like a apartment emergency, these rarely happen. Some of the cameras have an option to set up using your phone but you find it in the home security option. Great responses here.

I didnt realize he does croutch a bit. Not much but still enough. I didnt think it was too short as there has always been about an inch or so between his head and the top of the crate but he's croutching.

I didnt buy that crate. The neighbor upstairs from me gave it to me as they were moving and didnt want it and they had a pitbull puppy but said it was the largest they sell. Im not an expert in dog crates. I just had to spray paint some areas and its like new.

When i reanranged my livingroom, i planned for it. Theres room sideways for one bigger and top wise but not wide from wall out. This one is up against the door frame so i have like an inch, or less, before i have to rearange this entire livingroom.

I could move the tv and put it next to the tv i suppose.

Anyway, need one one size bigger, i agree with that.

I tried the bike to run him for a few mins. Its bran new but has been outside since the weekend before 11/11/15...never been ridden, just covered on the screened in porch. The front tire is almost fully flat but i could get a few peddles in and got him to mostly trot and for a sec run. I only did it for like 5 mins before my body craved to the pain but he got to get a little exersize before another 10 hrs in the crate.

@lostforgottensoul Is there a specific reason that you need to crate the dog while you are at work?? Is he destructive or something??? I don't have a dog now, but I've never crated one either. After housebreaking they were always allowed to roam the house? I have customers that have dogs and they don't crate their dogs either. So I'm just curious if there is a reason.

Is there a specific reason that you need to crate the dog while you are at work??

Yep, the other thread I referenced was a time that my dad & step mom left for a week and I didnt know she was staying so when I left him out, being that he has severe seperation aniexty (where pills dont help and i dont like shoving pills down his throat and game like toys nor the tv or radio, nothing helped) he shit and pissed from one door to the next where i had to literally break my back cleaning it up after work.

He is used to always being around people since my dad and step mom, for now, live with me and they are home 24/7. When he isn't around people he freaks.

As you see in @joeylittle's post here crating was the best idea for that issue that we were all discussing most of that thread.

Have you got a treadmill?

No, but I was thinking a motorized something like a motorized bicycle would be cheaper? Plus unless its the expensive foldable kind, I have no room for a treadmill.

@lostforgottensoul oh shit, when they have separation anxiety it's so awful. I've had 2 customers that their dogs both had it, and it was pathetic. One of the dogs litterly ate portions of their house, he destroyed doorcases, ripped of bathroom cabinet doors. It cost them over $1000 to repair it. The other dog, would claw doors to shit, and she would get so bad she'd foam at the mouth.

Yeah, that is bad. I'm sorry. Yes, he is cute, even though I'm not fond of pits. He looks like a cream puff as far as attitude goes.

He looks like a cream puff as far as attitude goes.

He's a big baby that just wants to be loved all the time. He doesnt get that he's almost 80 lbs. He thinks he can sit in your lap.

He is protective, dont get me wrong. But he isnt mean. Unless someone is trying to hurt me, he is a big baby.

He was given to be (rescued) by my dad for protection to help me feel safe while living alone. That was almost 4 yrs ago.

He is VERY well trained.

Most that are afraid of pits love him.

None are open after 7pm. I work until 11pm.
You cannot have a dog. It is absolutely 100% animal cruelty to put a dog that size in a crate for that long. If you have to work those hours and cannot be responsible for your dog you cannot have that dog. It is completely obvious that that is a high-energy breed of dog. You cannot put him in that crate that long that often. He will end up injuring himself in the crate. I find it doubtful you like being locked in a closet that long. I bet it drove you insane. It did me. Your dog will too. He will get bored, he will get tired, he will get cramped, he will be in pain, he will go insane, he won't be able to stay still, he'll end up hurting himself on the crate, if he can't get out he will start chewing his own self. He will defecate in there, he will piss in there, he will be laying in his own excrement, he will eat his own excrement. It is not healthy or safe for your dog to be in that crate for that amount of hours. You need to take into consideration that if you work these hours and have no one to check on your dog or dog sit for you that you need to re-home your dog. I am completely serious. Do not ever post this on the internet again and expect everyone to turn a blind eye to exactly what you said. You have expressed repeatedly you feel this is okay for the dog or you have no other option. Someone experienced in animalcare is telling you it absolutely is not. If you cannot come up with an alternative solution you are committing animal cruelty whether you feel it is cruel or not. If you want to turn a blind eye to this message then you are not Healthy enough to have that dog if you are going to treat him that way after reading this. You may want someone to tell you it is okay. Absolutely no one should. He cannot be in that crate that long.

I don't know if you bothered to read the whole thread, but the general consensus is that it's not a good thing, to leave the dog in the crate for that long.

Also, if you look up a few posts, the op agreed that the current crate is to small and needs to be replaced with a larger one.

Here's the thing though.
The angry tirade post you wrote there, isn't really helpful. You might have noticed that other member's and myself are brainstorming idea's to find a working solution for this problem.

If all you do is acuse the op of being a crazy animal abuser, fine... I guess. Not my first choice of words, but whatever.

Or.
Why not join the discussion?
You don't have to, but it would be a far more pleasant than this. You're also far more likely to be listened to.

But, it's up to you. I can't and won't tell you what to do.

It is completely obvious that that is a high-energy breed of dog.

Pitbull isnt a breed. It makes up several breeds with even more temperments and energy levels. He is happy laying around all day. He ISNT high energy. BUT he goes out and runs every day. So what is your issue exactly?

Your dog will too. He will get bored, he will get tired, he will get cramped, he will be in pain, he will go insane, he won't be able to stay still, he'll end up hurting himself on the crate, if he can't get out he will start chewing his own self. He will defecate in there, he will piss in there, he will be laying in his own excrement, he will eat his own excrement.

Do you know anything about dog crating or are you just making up that bullshit as you go?

For the record, my dog has NEVER popped or peed in there though when left out he DID poop and pee all over my house because he has BAD seperation anxiety and freaks when he is alone. Not secured in a "den".

Im not going to even bother showing you sites to educate you. All that takes is a google search. If you wanted to educate yourself, you would have done that already. No, you want to take all of your anger out on me. Pick some place else to do that!

My dog is NOT harmed in there, AT ALL!

Now your quote is much more suited for a puppymill where the dogs spend 24/7 in a crate. That is NOT happening here.

You need to take into consideration that if you work these hours and have no one to check on your dog or dog sit for you that you need to re-home your dog.

Re-homing will NOT happen.

Not sure what "these" hours are as I work a 40 hr week just like any other full time employee and have turned down BUCKETS of overtime because of my dog, in a time that I REALLY need the money as I may be laid off 12/7 and my "roommates" are moving in Jan.

I plan to have a dog walker by then but on short notice like that?

Do not ever post this on the internet again and expect everyone to turn a blind eye to exactly what you said.

I do not take well of being told what to do. But im curious, what exactly did I say?

Someone experienced in animalcare is telling you it absolutely is not.

PLEASE! I did animal rescue for YEARS and shut down puppymills for YEARS. You are NOT "experienced" in animal care if you are not educated even a little bit on dog crating.

So please, at least, educate yourself.
