Although I am absolutely exhausted right now, today I stood up for myself and I liked who I am for a brief period of time and for me that's just remarkable. Without going into lots of detail, someone who I told could have a refridgerator, free of charge, from a rental unit behind the house I live in decided they could take the microwave too without asking.
Really, all they had to do was call me and I would have let them have it as a tenant passed on in this small unit last year and the unit needs to be completely cleaned, sanitized, and have all remaining contents thrown out. I just don't like the fact that this person didn't call me to ask if they could have the microwave.....that really does not sit well with me. I called them in regards to the fridge and found they had arrived before they said they would and removed the fridge and I entered the unit to check and found the microwave missing and calmly (not easy, trust me) asked them if they had taken the microwave, too. They admitted as much and I basically said, that's so uncool, I really am worth the phone call to ask if you can have it, and I mentioned that I'm kind of embarrassed now as I will be seeing this person in my church from time to time and I'm feeling awkward about that now.
This person offered me $25 for it after attempting to justify their actions and I accepted this offer, thinking they would not follow through, but they did. I was civil when I accepted the money but after they drove off I realized that I had stood up for myself! And not done extremes, meaning going way overboard with it or just saying nothing and feeling trampled upon. This is major for me - taking the middle ground and feeling sane after the interaction and realizing that likely this was healthy adult behavior.
I am very depleted right now after this but I wanted to post this story as I am finding hope in this - maybe someone else might too? Thanks for letting me post and for hearing me out!
