Common anesthetic procedure dramatically improves well being of veterans with PTSD

Summary:
A single application of a common anesthetic procedure could be the answer to alleviating anxiety, depression and psychological pain in those suffering from chronic, extreme post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), according to research.

A single application of a common anesthetic procedure could be the answer to alleviating anxiety, depression and psychological pain in those suffering from chronic, extreme post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

In a study presented at the ANESTHESIOLOGY™ 2014 annual meeting, researchers followed 12 patients with PTSD who had undergone a simple anesthetic procedure called a stellate ganglion block (SGB). This common procedure involves injecting a small amount of local anesthesia into the base of the neck. SGB is traditionally used to treat a variety of conditions, from pain syndromes to sleep disorders.

"While it doesn't cure the problem, we found that SGB appears to be a fast-acting and effective long-term treatment for chronic, extreme PTSD in veterans," said Michael T. Alkire, M.D., staff anesthesiologist at the Long Beach VA Healthcare System in California. "These improvements far outlasted what we would expect from SGB, which is usually used as a temporary nerve block and typically lasts three to five hours."

In the study, the patients each were given one SGB and followed closely with structured interviews and other psychological tests for six months after treatment. The positive effects of the SGB were evident often within minutes and resulted in significant improvement of scores for the Clinician Administered PTSD Score, or CAPS, the test used to measure the severity of PTSD.

Symptoms improved over time, and after one month, CAPS scores registered normal to mild PTSD levels for most of the patients. Positive effects were still seen at three months, but began fading and were generally gone by six months. Overall, 75 percent of the participants reported significant improvement of their PTSD symptoms after the SGB.

Data from the study further suggested that SGB might also be an effective initial treatment for depression and anxiety disorders.

"Further work is needed to identify which patients might respond best to this treatment as well as understand the mechanisms involved that produce such a rapid, dramatic and long-term change in psychological health for some patients," said Dr. Alkire, who also is a professor of anesthesiology at the University of California-Irvine.

And what they're not saying is one little slip of the needle and you're paralyzed from the neck down infinitum. And knowing what it's like to have a tech take blood at the VA, well.....

As someone that has spent a lot of time in the hospital due to being wounded and some other things as well, needles are not my friend. And any injection into the spinal canal is not without risk. It seems like every so often someone comes up with a way to alleviate the symptoms of PTSD. Call me old fashion but there is already a methodology that works. Therapy and if needed some meds. This treatment is proven to work if you work at the treatment. There's just no 'magic' pill cure. There may be one day but I don't think this is it. Just my opinion but the more I can stay out of the hospital and away from sharp object being stuck into me the better I am.

It sucks to be me.....I get 2 needles tomorrow....:D To tell you the truth, needles don't bother me all that much. Unless the damn thing looks like rail road spike......

Neighbour gets two-monthly injections like that against migraine. It helps her a lot.

Son in law is paralyzed from the neck down after a car accident early this year.
That has been an eye opener, his battle.
The way professionals just stumble through their career sometimes. They ruin it for the good ones that know what they're doing.

Seeing him and knowing how medical staff is not always 100% up to scratch, nobody is sticking a needle near anything, period.

Hated needles day one. Being a military Brat, I got plenty. Then I married a diabetic and saw lotz. THEN, I had to give shots to her. Damn, I hated that. Felt like I was abusing her or something. Only thing I use needles for any more is to oil a place I can't get the can into.

I just had a needle for my flu shot, since I'm too old for the nasal mist, plus I have seizure disorder (mTBI). Earliest in the season, I've ever gone for flu shots! Hmmm, guess the Ebola news inspired me!

I started last year with a flu shot, first time ever. Guess I'll be on board for that now.

This whole ebola mess seems to, as always, point out how we're late to the dance. Don't want to make this about that but it is more than scary. I'm paranoid enough about going out in public, don't need anything else too make me just batten down the hatches and stay in the cellar.

Just think.......If the Gooberment wanted to get rid of a shit pot of old ppl's They would use the flu shot!!!:devil::devil: The wife talked me into getting one last year.......Then I find out later, that something was not done correctly with that flu vaccine...
Not as bad as the f*cked swine flu shot. That killed more ppl's then the swine flu did!!!!!

NO MORE FOR ME!!!!!

lol... We get them in the late spring/ early summer (usually). Flown in all special. Unavoidable contact with people returning from the ME in certain weeks/months & caring for children rates an early vax. After years of getting the 10 days "Yo. You dead, yet?" full on flu before finding this out... I could kiss those little vials.

I've never taken a flu shot nor will I ever. I've got enough shite vaccines running through my body from the first gulf war, im not putting anything else in me. Seems like everyone that takes these shots get more sick than if they havent.
