Hi guys! How is everyone?

We've been having a difficult time around here lately. No need to get into the details right now.

My guy has been in talk therapy for almost 5 years now. Group and individual therapy. However, I do see improvements but some things haven't changed. He has alot of anger / rage and continues to deal with it by verbally lashing out (at me).

So my question is...

Have you been in any different forms of therapy? CBT? EMDR? And did it help? He has so many traumas' I wonder if one of these forms would help?

Thanks for taking the time to read this. I appreciate it! Any and all advice welcome.

XO

Emdr is really helping me, but my therapist is very experienced and also a trauma specialist. It has made such a difference compared to my first therapist. I have heard emdr horror stories on this site and people who had great outcomes... so choose wisely.

I'm doing some research now...

What I understand is EMDR would work for someone with one (1) trauma no...
Actually, emdr works on themes, many of which commonly link traumas together. For example, when we did a set on something abusive from high school, my mind still swung me into college when I was raped. (The control theme linked them) When we did a set on shame it took me back to age 6. I think it can be used for multiple traumas, it just takes longer to heal. If you find an emdr person, you could ask the multiple trauma question.

EMDR, provided by someone properly trained, and with the proper equipment will help for combat PTSD.

Traditionally, EMDR helps forget about the trauma.
For combat PTSD, it works a little differently (or at least it does for me).
For myself, and for a lot of others veterans, it is not the actual trauma, but our mental reaction to the trauma. A lot of times even caused by the reactions of others after the fact. We were trained differently. Our brains work differently. We need to reassure ourselves that what we did, and what we experienced was valid within our mindset.

EMDR in our case, helps. It helps you accept what happened. It eases your mind.

However, I will stress, by someone properly trained and with the right equipment. Not by some hack, that read a book and that “pulses” their fingers on your wrist.

Exactly. It is very evident to me that my therapist is very well trained in emdr. For me, emdr doesn't make me forget anything, it just refiles it so that it is a normal bad memory, not one that I re-live over and over again. It is weird. I even make a point to my T how weird her job is. ;) She agrees.

I guess I figured if they offered that type of therapy they would have mentioned it. I mean it's a Vet Center geared towards combat vets. We have to ask?

Maybe they did mention it. J doesn't share much about that part of therapy. That's a whole different post. ;)

Thanks for helpin' a sister out. Have a good night.

I am very emotionally reactive. Happy, sad, angry, you name it.

I’ve processed much of my trauma. I’ve tried/done EMDR and CBT and DBT and.... You get the picture.

All of these therapies HELPED but none could really “solve” my issue of reactivity. To give you an idea, I’m a million times better than I used to be, but my reactivity is such that it still puts a strain on relationships.

I’ve done parts work via Inter Family Systems Therapy (IFST) in the past, and now I’m doing it yet again. I feel that I’m FINALLY getting to the root of how to handle my reactivity. I have 3 main dissociated parts, little E, fear, and anger. I’ve created diagrams for how they work and how they interact. I’m now working on making core/adult me step up to the plate to protect my little one (LO) while simultaneously trying to get fear and anger to back down and trust that adult me can do the job. Whew. Did I confuse you? (This stuff IS confusing!) Parts work can be done by anyone. My therapist doesn’t do IFST but does understand dissociation and parts. I bought a book and workbook for doing self-IFST kinds of work and they’ve been helpful so far. (I won’t leave my therapist as she’s one of the best I’ve ever had, even though she doesn’t know the nitty-gritty of IFST.)

It’s an amazing feeling to know that I’ve finally found something to help with my reactivity.

I have had a series of sessions with a special trauma therapist for EMDR and before I had it I had so many intrusive bad, horrible memories come back and torment and haunt me each and every day and I have had multiple traumas too. The EMDR therapy helped me to relive the memories and then they taught me the truth about me in that situation which took away my horrid shame and guilt feelings. No more, each day is without the torture of being reminded of those very painful traumas. It worked and I was so terrified before taking that therapy. I was also ready for it too.

Currently I have a CBT therapist and it is really helping me so much in the few times since I have returned to therapy. I have noticed a lot of improvement since going back.

Good luck to the both of you.

Thanks for your insight Eve. I went back and read my op and it did sound like I was only asking because J yells at me once in awhile. That's definitely not the case.

He's made awesome progress in all ways. Except this one area. When it happens. It kicks both our butts for a couple of days. I get mad. He gets depressed. You know the drill. ;)

He's mentioned it's reactionary too. Alot of the time it happens when he wakes up. I guess he's "reacting" to a nightmare. He will wake up bitching. Doesn't matter what about. Idk.

Like you said. I'm confused because it's confusing.
