Seroquel turned out to be bad news - any experience weaning off of it?

I was taking seroquel for several months, and it was causing tachycardia, so we reduced my dose. The tachycardia didn't stop, and last night my heart rate reached 170, which is 10 less than when it becomes dangerous. It is just inappropriate sinus tachycardia, so it's nothing to be concerned about, however, now I have to wean off of the seroquel. Anyone else had experience with weaning off this med?

What was your experience like when you reduced your dose? Any major negative effects? Titrating down can be a good preliminary indicator of what discontinuation will be like.

And, what is your dose currently? People take seroquel in a wide range of doses, knowing what you're at might help someone respond in more detail...

My current dose is 100 mg AM, 100 MG noon, 50-75 at 4-5 PM and 250 for bed.

Hi @Angelwings - I've had one experience weaning off Seroquel. I'm not sure if your doctor is going to supervise you doing this so if you haven't been told I'd suggest you ask for some close monitoring whilst reducing the dosage and until you are free and clear for a month or two afterwards.

My understanding at the dose you are taking is that you will have to taper off gently.

If you must come off it quickly I'd strongly suggest requesting being an inpatient. Obviously this depends on the heart condition and how quickly it resolves.

It can be a relatively painless experience for some people. I think they are really fortunate and you may be one of them. I hope you are. However, it wasn't for me. I don't think I truly understood exactly what this drug was doing and had done to me, physically and mentally, until I started to move off it, and then when I was completely off it and had time to contemplate the experience.

Suffice to say - I would not touch it again. And also, most doctors do not appreciate what a big deal it is to come off it. Mine didn't until it was far too late and I was in lots of trouble.

My adverse effects from tapering only really kicked in very badly towards the final days and when I was seroq. free. I had an enormous 'adjustment' but I had been taking it significantly longer than you and at a high dose.

Are you taking any other meds? They may not seem to work as well after you start reducing your dose of seroq.

Obviously Seroquel has a sedating effect. So if you find your mood swings, anxiety and general ptsd...ish symptoms returning with a vengeance then that's going to start indicating to you how much seroquel is actually holding back all that stuff. So I'd suggest you prepare for whatever seroquel seems to have resolved to bounce back.. hard.

I had physical maladies from withdrawal and these included all senses except hearing. eg. visual changes - colours were more vivid, reading glasses needed to be changed and vision continued to alter for over a year afterwards. Sense of touch became more acute. Internal brain noises ramped up significantly. (I know there is a name for them.. but I cannot recall what it is right now :sorry: ) Major stomach upset, vomiting etc. Changes in body temp, drastic weight loss, loss of balance, huge thirst that could not be quenched, immune system went South rapidly and I became subject to a lot of minor infections. Basically my body went into shock. And after I recovered I was not doing well mentally either.

Please don't let this happen to you. Have medical and social support while you get off and adjust to life without this drug.

Yeah, I recently tried to get my dose of 300 at night down wayyyy wayyyy too fast.
Seriously, set what you think is a snails' pace, and then halve it.
Medical supervision is a must with this kind of thing.
Good luck.

What are you taking instead of the Seroquel? My doctor suggested it and after reading reviews I was skeptical. I'm feeling stuck in my symptoms yet the medication choices don't look great from the standpoint of side effects and the awful withdrawal.

Not sure who you are asking @bowiesmom but for me I had to stop all medication after ceasing Seroquel. I have undergone intensive therapy as an inpatient, outpatient and this has been ongoing for years now. I am no longer able to take medication. I am exquisitely sensitive to medication and the side-effects.

After recovering from my experience (and I very nearly didn't recover) I am sort of sworn off meds now lol.

However, (and this is a big But!) You may find it is very suitable for you. You may find you do not suffer any significant side effects and if and when you decide to cease or withdraw off it, you may do it easily and without adverse consequences. Everyone is individual when it comes to medications and this is includes Seroquel.

That is why it is very important you discuss this with your doctor and are monitored closely when you commence this drug, whilst you are on this drug and when you stop this drug. It is definitely not a set and forget type of medication.

I don't like it but I have good reason to not like it. You made have an entirely different experience.

It may be that this (or anther drug) may assist you to become less symptomatic and enhance therapy outcomes.

The big issue here is that imo no drug will work forever in resolving your symptoms. Ideally, a combination of both may well be a perfectly good idea. But, please do not rely solely on any medication forever.

Hope this helps. :)
