So, who has a stuffed animal or two, and what can you tell us about them?
My Little Guys have three stuffed animals that they adore.
Momee (pronounced "Moe-May"). Momee lives in a bag in my office, under my desk, and comes with us to therapy sessions. At some point in the next few months, I need to wash Momee to get out all the salt from the tears she/he has absorbed. Momee is extra soft and is loved by both Little Wendell & Nathan, who often hold him tight when talking about frightening things.
Thomas-the-Bear. I got Thomas when my sister and I were dividing my mom's estate (my mom died at age 49 from breast cancer). My mom had a small collection of stuffed animals that she had put together after my dad died. My daughter heard a lot of stories about Thomas digging tunnels, causing mischief, and eating peanuts. Thomas grew up in Nepal and traveled to the U.S. I've slept with Thomas off and on for about a quarter century. A few years ago, his nose broke off, and he's a bit misshapen now. Thomas is who Little Wendell would like to be--finding safety & adventure by leaving home, fearless & fiercely independent, but loving, too.
Nanna. Nanna just joined us a few months ago. My daughter was sending most of her stuffed animals to charity (or the dump, I forget). I rescued Nanna, who is a bunny rabbit. I had a stuffed bunny rabbit when I was young. Nanna is little Nathan's favorite. Cuddling with Nanna reminds Nathan that he is loved and deserves touch & closeness. When Little Nathan is afraid, or just needs reassurance, he reaches for Nanna. Nanna lives in my bed these days.
You get to guess which one is my avatar, which Wendell put up as a tip of the hat to his Little Guys! It's hard going about life doing adult things all the time. Having my stuffed animals is a way for my Little Guys to get the attention they deserve and for them to act out their desires in a safe way, and most of all, to have joy in life.
