News Worldwide impact of the novel coronavirus (covid-19)

It should be mandatory that everyone get their flu shot. Everyone in the world.

I’m all for mandatory vaccinations for a lot of things, because herd immunity. The flu is not one of them.

One thing I keep missing seeing with this entire COVID19 hysteria is any discussion on estimated numbers of unknown cases. I looked up symptoms today after we finally got our first confirmed case.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is characterized by mild symptoms including a runny nose, sore throat, cough, and fever. Illness can be more severe for some people and can lead to pneumonia or breathing difficulties.

I’ve also seen interviews of people who have tested positive after having been in contact with infected - and didn’t show any symptoms.

I know for damn sure I’ve never seen and never would see a doctor for a mere running nose or sore throat. I’d stay home a day or two and sleep it off. Even a slight fever.

————

Maybe I just remember incorrectly, which I doubt because I was paying particular attention for personal reasons at the time, but SARS in 2003 didn’t cause nearly as much panic outside of China. Like, at all. And was way more deadly at 10%. Corona is currently at 3% which I still expect to come down...

The thing is COVID 19 is highly contagious, and we don't even know of potential long term immune system issues, yet.

Most people aren't going to know they are infected and are a carrier, and those with compromised immune systems, compromised respiratory issues and such are going to come down HARD and possibly die.

My thoughts are, if you have a runny nose, sore throat, cough etc? DON'T go to the Dr, don't go anywhere, the risks aren't worth it, you are, possibly infected with COVID and someone could die.

If you get so sick that you need hospitalization? Then let them know, otherwise, avoid any and all possible contact.

I'm trying to get out of a house inspection, at present, and plan on going NOWHERE for at least two weeks. I live in a very international area, and testing is poor to non existant here, so no one is going to have a clue who might be carrying the virus, until a later date.

The thing is, I repeat, it's a VERY CONTAGIOUS and possibly fatal (for some people, but don't they deserve our vigilance?) virus.

possibly fatal (for some people, but don't they deserve our vigilance?) virus.

Absolutely!! But so far it seems the same high risk groups as usual. CORVID19 is contagious, but so are many things that are potentially fatal to some people. Common sense (if you’re sick? Stay home!) and some general appropriate behavior (handwashing? Really people?) should take us far.

I have close friends in China. Of course I was worried about them. When I checked in with them, they did not seem overly worried.

I have friends who are high risk because of a suppressed immune system. Of course I worry about them. But as was also pointed out in this thread by high risk groups, they tend to be particularly vigilant and take precautions as they always do during flu season etc.

I also have friends who are not high risk and are currently absolutely freaking out because they think this is particularly dangerous and expect this to become a second Spanish Flu.

Again, common sense and some consideration for the high risk folks - absolutely appropriate. The panicking that keeps being fueled by the media and the widespread hysteria? Misguided. Dangerous.

I don’t mean to be dismissive. I’m really sorry if it comes across like this. Having a hard tome verbalizing my thoughts. I’m not naive and this is a severe disease for some people. Every single death is tragic for their family and close ones. But - we also still need to keep things in perspective. And I agree with a previous comment. I’m more worried about what fear and panic can cause (we’re already seeing increased racism towards Asians as well as shortages of medical supplies where they’re actually needed; people who came back from travel to subsequent outbreak areas and testing positive are literally being harassed and bullied on social media — lots of those kind of panic examples) than about CORVID19, and that is including accounting for the high risk groups.

I am a high risk group. However I find it hard to get worried. Just like flu really- I get a shot, but the flu virus going around isn’t always the one that we have been vaccinated for - and if flu takes me one day it takes me. Shrug . These are really not the things keeping me struggling with PTSD . I do empathise for those for whom it is - and it suggests to me that their lives might have lots of other good things they are scared to lose- I hope so anyway!

Please rub some tea tree oil around your nose and then wear your FFP2 mask. Eat about 10 Garlic cloves a Day and then chew on ginger if you travel or use public transport, meet up with people ect. A garlic clove chain would be useful as well.. you keep other people at a distance.

A Message I got from a dear person a few Days ago. ?

ETA And for pete's sake, don't get your information about the virus and necessary precautions from social media like YouTube!

I'm not. It wasn't a news channel. It was a prepper channel specifically talking about prepper for ANY contagion.

I read my news. I don't rely on youtube for any sort of news. That would be rather stupid.

Masks are recommended for people who have been diagnosed with the virus and are self isolating, or those who are caring for a person with the virus.

Except everyone in China, even those without the virus, has N95 masks on. They are not in short supply. People get them for all sorts of reasons. Not sure why it's a big deal to get N95 masks that I can use when DIYing something.

I wasn't going to buy it anyway. I remembered this thread and searched out of curiosity when he mentioned N95 masks. Geeze!

Charges may be laid?

Yes!! The women in the brawl have been charged with affray! And imo so they should...

I would call the pool directly and ask them as to safety recommendations.

^Thanks. I'm going to rock up & ask to speak to somebody who is doing the checking.

Personally I'd swim so long as the chlorine or bromide levels were between 2 and 7 parts per million for an indoor pool and up to 10 parts per million (ppm) for an outdoor pool. Regular tap water is between 1 ppm and 2 ppm... usually.

^Thank you @The Albatross - I'll sound a little bit sensible if I ask if the chlorine is btwn 2 & 7 ppm. (It's indoor)

Apparently an Australian newspaper has begun including several blank pages in the paper, so people won't run out of toilet paper.

^ I hope you're joking because it's JUST NOT TRUE. :hilarious:

^Searched the whole town, in shops, not houses  for toilet rolls today. None... Why??

Sometimes discussion is really just discussion...

^Yeah JL and it's interesting too.

It's worked really well at slowing down the spread of the virus in places where the virus has been so far.

^Agreed. And that's important, because if any of us need medical attention or support during the symptomatic phase of the infection, having a hospital, doctor who is not over-run by hundreds or thousands of people needing exactly the same as us, will be easier on us and everyone.

So isolation might slow it all down, reduce the overall infection rate & allow medical services to have some hope of coping.

since so much has been killed in the chlorine soup.

^Hmm.. I don't know why I ever took up swimming now that you've told me about all of that awful stuff that can beat the chlorine. So..thanks.. I think.. lol..

Please rub some tea tree oil around your nose

^Depending on what you call Tea tree oil DON'T DO THAT. It's not meant to be put anywhere near your eyes. Be careful that stuff can rip rust off a can...

. you keep other people at a distance.

^Yeah.. you'll never be popular again... Your remedies sound very pagan actually. :cautious:

It made me giggle- the garlic thing. I used to use a subway line regularly where there was a guy who was ‘known’ for eating cloves of garlic whole. Morning and evening. It was a busy route at peak in a major city . People had no choice but to be crammed up close to him. I once saw him off peak- cracking whole bulbs, eating the cloves. I wonder if he could taste much or if that strength of flavour damages your ability to enjoy subtle flavour?

The thing with panic buying is it’s self-perpetuating. One person sees people walking round with five packs of toilet roll, they think there’s a problem and maybe they should... and then it spreads, just like a virus. When one product runs out people move on to the next thing, and here now we’re struggling to get pasta, paracetamol, cleaning products, tinned products, as well as toilet roll and hand sanitiser, and lots of other stuff is running low. The company I work for is holding emergency meetings to up supply, because it’s not like they don’t have the stock, it’s just proving impossible to keep it on the shelves. I've seen it before, but not to this degree.

It’s got to the point where people here are feeling the need to justify their normal purchases in case anyone thinks they’re panic buying! A small minority are being really unpleasant it- someone told my boss they hoped she got Corona virus and died because there was no hand sanitiser- but most are just finding it really bizarre.

It’s got to the point where people here are feeling the need to justify their normal purchases in case anyone thinks they’re panic buying!.

♥️ Thank you. I considered reducing my order ( a pack of toilet roll for upstairs, a pack for down stairs ) because I felt silly. Then I realised it would be silly to change my normal order and make life more difficult for my self unpacking my groceries.

I took it as a lesson to self in not comparing- for good or bad reasons

The panic buying is INSANE! I just bought one pack of TP, one pack of bottled water, and one bottle of bleach. These were all supplies I needed anyway but in many stores the shelves were wiped clean.

Going to the dollar tree store today should be interesting. Only getting things I need anyway. (I don’t ship there too often but you can’t beat 50¢ cards!)

On a different note, I got groceries a couple days ago. Things in the store were as usual. There was a first confirmed case in this state a few days ago too, so maybe things will change. So far, I haven't heard anyone in the a area expressing undue concern.

I did hear a story on the radio about the Australian newspaper providing blank pages. I don't know if it was true, but I took it to be Aussie humor. The news reader remarked that "you can't do THAT with digital media."
