News Worldwide impact of the novel coronavirus (covid-19)

The Washington state thing.....
the virus showed up in a long term care facility. The 11 who have died were all elderly and had health problems. Public Health now thinks it's been in the state for at least 6 weeks but people only had mild symptoms so they weren't tested for it. A lot of businesses around the Seattle area have their people working from home and there have been some major events postponed but it's not quite the doom and gloom that the media has portrayed.

There are several counties in the state that have people they are monitoring for possible exposure but so far it's a non event. The biggest problem is people freaking out and overloading the ER and 911 systems because they are sure they have it and they are afraid they are going to drop dead. The media is hyping people up in a big way....and the message that most who get it will have a mild case is completely lost.

Although you can still find hand sanitizer and toilet paper in the stores so maybe not quite as bad here!

Omg! We've just had a fully qualified doctor attend to 70 patients in the last few days as well as attending at elderly care facilities whilst he was sick with cov19.

The health minister is quoted as saying she's 'flabbergasted'.

He flew back from USA with a runny nose and just went back to work without seeking an opinion. Now the health authorities are chasing down the people on the plane, the patients he saw and have locked down the facilities he attended. All will have to be isolated now for 14 days and of course supported if they've acquired the infection. Plus all the staff he's been in contact with and friends, family etc...

What a crank!

ETA: The females having a brawl in Woolworths over toilet rolls STILL LAUGHING! More idiots. Charges may be laid?

Does anyone know if it is safe for me to swim at my local public pool - just wondering - it's like chlorine soup? Otherwise, I might cancel my membership for a while and save the $. ??

I don't know where in Washington you can still get hand sanitizer or TP. Certainly no where I have lived or gone. The shelves are constantly empty. Errr... and please folks, it's become pretty clear where I live. I generally try to hide that. If you can not quote this post I'd appreciate it. I'm paranoid.

There is an article in the news today on how to make hand sanitizer.

I just don't get the whole coronavirus outbreak. Now, we have one person that tested positive for it in Tulsa, Oklahoma..more on a cruise ship and more in a New York nursing home as well as a U.S. soldier stationed in Italy. In sure I'm leaving some out.

I just don't get how everyone is fine one day and has some super-killer virus the next. I'm not convinced it's airborne.

eBay is forbidding new listings of hand sanitizer and face masks over concerns of online price gouging due to the coronavirus

Lex got it's first case last night.

@blackemerald1 - pool asepsis varies in requirements and standards state to state, but checking sanitizer levels and Ph has to be done on opening/closing and here in KY one time a day... in FL every it was every 4 hours for the hours of operation... and documented. The Health Department is the certification authority for commercial pools. So between your member services, asking the certified pool operator you can check them for any guidelines. Good question though cuz I was thinking about crossing over to aqua therapy for my shoulder if I have to continue PT. Outside of my own pools that I managed (4) for the Y's... I was notorious for bringing my own test kit before a swim since I was immunosuppressed/compromised. Personally I'd swim so long as the chlorine or bromide levels were between 2 and 7 parts per million for an indoor pool and up to 10 parts per million (ppm) for an outdoor pool. Regular tap water is between 1 ppm and 2 ppm... usually.

It's interesting...my university has imposed a self-quarantine "rule" (guideline, I don't get the impression they will enforce it) for anyone coming in from any country where the virus has been spreading. We're a big school, with many international students, teachers, etc. 14 days to keep yourself at home before coming to campus. They've also started cancelling large gatherings. I'm trying to decide if I think it's smart or alarmist.

isn't it amazing that even now when the CDC and the WHO are pumping out information, there is reason to question everything you hear? if you throw out anything that you can discount by listening to an opposing opinion said by someone else, you are left with very little info to trust.
we have a huge medical-pharmo industrial complex, world-wide government agencies funded primarily to try their best to control this kind of thing, the best communications networks ever available and yet if I listen to everything said by everyone and throw out all the conflicting stuff i am left with wash your hands, often, don't touch your face. Avoid coughing people.

I have started trying to eliminate the sources of bad information based purely on how often what they say is overridden by a more qualified source, hoping that ignoring the outliers will make attempts to find good info from good sources more efficient in the future.

that was easy.

We have enough to be hyper-vigilant about folks......this is pretty much the example of what you cannot control, right up there with giant meteor level uncontrollability. i for myself am more worried about what the frenzied mob may or may not have in their hands when they come down my street than what they have in their viral load. lets hope that good info disseminated to smart people can keep the adrenaline level below the danger level

for now, I wash my hands and don't touch my face. in that I trust and thats enough for one more day.
