News Worldwide impact of the novel coronavirus (covid-19)

I‘m working in the medical field.. I had a 47 hour week last week, and this week won’t be much easier..
Coming from south Germany, we have about 400 Covid-19 cases.

One colleague isnt able to work..
This means, I have to stay stable..

Stay safe. I looked on with admiration at the dedication and personal sacrifice Chinese health workers showed but their indomitable spirit and work ethic seem to have contributed to their infection rate - their bodies depleted by exhaustion and stress.

Overtime might be expected at times like this but hopefully we will stay that it’s not 24 hour days healing on top of each other- it becomes self defeating.

The workshop I was meant to be attending this weekend has been cancelled. Totally understandable, but no-one’s providing refunds because the government hasn’t (yet) advised it. Not that I wanted to spend five hours on a train with a bunch of strangers. It sucks all round.

This morning my T and I were making emergency plans just in case. There’s a rumour of two cases very near where she lives.

I would say I’m planning on shutting myself away all weekend and avoiding people, but as that's what I usually do I’m not sure I can blame it on Coronavirus.

I’m into this thread well into the discussions....so apologize if my words are not up to date with where the thread is.

Some of my thoughts:
- Most dangerous thing about Covid-19 is the media.
- I understand the immuno-compromised population and those of certain age ranges are more at risk; and must take measures to protect themselves from infection. Remainder of the population, take measures to protect the aforementioned groups by preventing the spread. No panic, just considerations and otherwise good hygiene.
- Toilet paper panic??? I don’t get it, it’s a thing here. Hysteria. If you self-quarantine, you’ll have all the time in the world to take a bath or shower after you poop or conduct other toilet business. If you run out of TP, there are so many other ways you can wipe your @$$. Humans....come on. Am I missing something??

Things I’m confused about
- It’s a flu (I’m not medically trained) and I know there’s no vaccine, or immunization yet....but if it falls into the flu category....those who are healthy and contract the illness will create antibodies to combat the illness....no? If someones at risk, then they need medical care and support. I’m not saying go out and get infected!

I’ll try to explain my thought a bit better: Like the common flu shot is a weakened strain of the flu to train your body to fight it. If you don’t get the flu shot, you may get the flu and it could be worse for you but you likely won’t die (if you’re not in the at risk population).

So the panic feels very skewed to me. I also don’t know if I’m under-reacting because of my own life experiences with chaos. This covid19 thing doesn’t even rate much of a second thought more than ‘wash hands, protect others from my germs’

That was a bit long winded....sorry.

I’m most worried about medications today. If imported medications or shortages become a problem, how will those of us on meds that need slow tapers off or maintenance drugs such as thyroid meds survive? My youngest tried to harm herself when she forgot to take her med a few weeks ago. What will happen if we can’t get her med?

^Yes!! In most cases, do what you were ordinarily going to do. Same for me - my regular habit of self isolation means I'm not too fussed by staying at home. There's a silver lining...?

What will happen if we can’t get her med?

^Hey Skywatcher. Have you contacted your pharmacist and doctor? Potentially get ahead of the problem and prepare. Elderly people where I am have been advised to fill their scripts ahead of time so they don't have to head down to the chemist too often over the next four? months.

Technically it's not the flu. And that's one of the things that makes it more problematic currently. There is no good treatment. For the flu there are medicines that can help make it less potent (if caught early enough). Also a lot of people have built up some levels of resistance to the flu since it's a regular thing. I'm badly summarizing this article.

We have a few cases in Michigan now. And people have gone bonkers. It didn't help matters to have the Governor and Mayor declare a State of Emergency. In a matter of hours the stores have been ransacked. We went out for dinner at our favorite pizza place which is usually very busy and it was empty.
Events cancelled, schools closing, locking down nursing homes and hospitals. Even cancelled our St. Patrick's parade.

Be safe out there.
