News Worldwide impact of the novel coronavirus (covid-19)

Narrative here is shifting from "vaccine in 18months" to "living with the virus"
People are getting restless- don't blame them. our area of about 1.5 million has only seen a 2 or 3 known cases increase for 5 days in a row now.
I think people have lost sight about why we're physically distancing and staying home.
I see a lot of crap about how this is not more deadly than the flu and the death rate is only like 1 or 2%
A month in and people have already forgotten that this isn't about a death rate.
This is about spread- how fast this little mofo spreads means hospitals become overwhelmed means people have to choose who gets treatment and who doesnt, means someone will have to pick who lives and dies.

Not sure anyone is really prepared to hear or say "We can't treat your 65yr old parent because we think this 25yr old woman/man has a better chance of survival. No, you can't say goodbye because you're not allowed into the hospital"

And for the people who are restless or think it's a hoax- just look at new york (or italy or spain) to get a great visualization of where we'd all be if we hadn't gone on "lock down" and then think to yourself- "how confident am I that I or my mother/daughter/father/brother/sister/son wouldn't need ICU treatment if they caught this? How prepared am I to hear there are no ventilators and no viable treatment plans available for them when they do?"

and then, stop being a selfish asshole, shut up, and stay the f*ck at home!

(if it isn't necessary to go out ?)

The death rate for the flu is 0.01%. I agree that people are losing sight of why we are doing this. We have flattened the curve, and now people want out because we "won" the war against Covid. No, we didn't. One would think that people would want to wear masks to protect others around them, but no, they have to be ordered to. That says a lot about Americans, the me first country. I saw a video of a man saying they can't take away his God given rights as an American, that are in the constitution. As far as I know, God had nothing to do with the constitution, and noone has God given rights. These are the same people who want to restrict others' rights to align more with their religion. The constitution guarantees freedom of religion, which means we get to follow any religion we want, not that we get to make others adhere to ours. This is like an episode of Twilight Zone, and it just keeps getting crazier.

I grew up with a schizoprenic father and a schizo-affective brother. Reality was slippery in my house. Living in America now is like what I went through growing up. It's mind boggling and I have an idea of the truth based on working in infection control, my nursing classes and career. I keep seeing it slipping away as others mix up the truth so badly that normal people don't know what to believe. I think the government here is going for the "let it take it's toll in the country and get it over with". Even then, it won't go away.

^It seems like it.

You're right about it not going away. So far there isn't sufficient evidence to determine that exposure confers immunity. If that's true, or let's say it's similar to other corona viruses and our bodies get around 40 weeks immunity, not saying this one will but if it did, then that's not even a year. What's the toll going to be like if you just let it rip every year?

Australia has pinned down the infection rate & except for a couple of places where the virus has got into elderly care homes & devastating the occupants - we're are heading for consistently low to complete eradication. Or perhaps it might be safer to say it seems to be staying in the asymptomatic part of the population? Idk.

But - we're just as vulnerable as ever and will remain so. So letting it rip & shutting it down = same vulnerability.

Caveat to all of ^^ There isn't enough scientific evidence yet to determine immunity.

The first back and forth about milk was off-topic, but stayed contained - it was OK. The second milk-talk made it difficult to find the actual Covid content in this thread. So: dealing with milk has been moved to its own thread in Social.

@lostforgottensoul, if you think it would be more appropriate to the Anxiety forum, let us know via Contact Us.

All: let's not turn this thread into a personal advice-seeking one, thanks.

The Coronavirus: German Doctors Highlight Shortage Of Masks By Posing Naked In "Blanke Bedenken" Protest

♥♥♥ I LOVE THIS ♥♥♥
I really doubt government and hospitals are withholding ready supplies... are they?
Withholding? Yes/No. because if you are allowed a certain number of masks per employee, per shift? Your dept. may need 500 masks a day, or 3,500 for the week. Which have to be kept somewhere, usually on premises. So there are 3,000 masks just sitting there... that doctors and nurses aren’t allowed to use. No matter how wet/soggy/covered in someone else’s blood/vomit/mucous their current mask is. Someone bled all over your face? Too bad. This is your last mask for this shift. Be one with the biohazard. Think sanitary thoughts.

Ready Supplies? Also Yes/No. Soooooo many govts have gone on record saying there are “enough” masks... that even the article itself has to qualify any statements about a shortage with “what they (doctors & nurses) say”.

When govts say there’s no shortage, and doctors and nurses are saying there is? THAT’S a problem. Most likely falling under the paradigm of “most people would rather be reassured than research” or told a comforting lie, than a hard truth.

Hard truth? If masks are being rationed, there’s a shortage. Which compromises everyone’s safety, both doctors and patients. So the govt. attempting to calm the public panic by declaring there are enough masks? Creates a whole new series of problems, because it’s not true.

BECAUSE OMG. NO. STOP. I'll make some DIY face shields, I'll sew masks for them, I'll continue to advocate every hospital have better medical stockpiles for future pandemics, but please doctors, put YOUR PANTS BACK ON.
Misson? Success. :sneaky:

And that’s actually PART of the problem with lying to people. When everyone knew there was a shortage? There was a HUGE community push to make masks and shields. Then, when govts started saying “there’s no shortage”? People stopped trying to be part of the solution, because there’s no problem now, right? So can we go back to work, already? What’s the next goal, here?!? Let’s DO something.

I’m a strong believer in the 2% rule (98% of the people in the world are stupid)... but ALSO that most people? Need to be given a helluva lot more credit than we do. Panic is always a problem, (never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups!), but once we move past panic? People smarten up right quick. As we’ve seen in sooooooo many ways. Present people a problem, and once they stop freaking the hell out about it, they get down to solving it. In an attempt to appear more in control than they are? Govts are losing a treeeeemendous resource, in having their average citizen elbow to elbow with their experts figuring shit out, being told they’re no longer needed and to go back to their lives. Leaving expert all alone going; But we need them! ... Hello??? Somebody? Anybody??? Hello?...

I just turned on the tv for a min and they were talking about a restraunt that is doing take out only that will be reopening the dinning room on Mon and the business owner cannot find PPE. Cosco didn't have it, and 3 online retailers didn't have it. He cannot find it anywhere. They use mask and gloves. Looks like a shop simular to subway. The mayor said that he will not be supplying businesses with PPE but why? Why does the governor not get this from the President. Didn't the President say we had enough PPE for America to reopen? Now Florida is about to but not enough PPE for the businesses? With a Mayor refusing to help? I mean, f*ck!

Exactly, @Friday. People may not be stupid, but they are certainly dizzy from the amount of lies and conspiracy theories they're being fed. What is the truth. I believe the doctors and nurses. When Andrew Cuomo was asking for ventilators, people were told he was hoarding them. It's a true shit storm now, and has been. I still remember sitting in biology 101, and being told that a pandemic would happen. That was years ago. I was concerned for the wrong reason back then. It's not just the virus, it's the people.

I once read a post apocalyptic novel (my favorite kind) about how the economy slowly fell apart and that was what destroyed "life as we know it". I don't put the economy near protecting people from the virus, but it illustrated how many factors are involved in this. So many people are hoarding meat now because "the food chain is broken". Turns out the meat packing plants are making a political move, which I agree with.

The bottom line is that the virus is here to stay. We can either get rid of a lot of old and immune compromised people, or behave like other lives matter.

This is pretty much where we are at now.... and I can not stop laughing at this video....

"Avoid going to stores unless you need toilet paper or a fence panel..."
"It's very important that we GET infected, and also NOT get infected..." Too funny. And also too true. Sigh.

So we can remove all and any confusion around this time! She nailed it! Mass confusion and conflicting info! Nailed it!

So three days after our chief medical officer announces that all festivities for the summer are cancelled they announce that they're going to open the province.

It's the other halves turn to complain now.
Why now? Right at when they said we would peak and blah blah blah. It does seem odd until you remember, once again, it's not about saving "your" life... it's about keeping the hospitals from being overwhelmed. The numbers show the hospitals here can handle the peak.
Three stages. Stage 1 starts in 2 weeks but golf courses and dentists open Monday.

On the list to start up again I believe are elective surgeries, some retail stores, hair dressers..... more but I forget. Because it doesn't matter to me. I didn't go out, except for groceries and kid stuff before covid-19, I definitely won't be one of the morons that rushes out to go everywhere now.

Thankfully my parents (that I live with) have said the same thing- we'll see if they actually don't though, cuz they've already done some unnecessary crap when they shouldn't have.
And my ex is on board with giving the kids a year off their sports this fall because she doesn't want to be in the middle of the second wave.
Not sure what the teenager and her mom have decided about university, or if they haven't because the universities haven't decided either yet.

We'll see how this stage 1 re-opening goes by mid June though...... :meh:
