News Worldwide impact of the novel coronavirus (covid-19)

Will money cure Covid19?

Our government & a whole lot of European & Asian governments are hoping so. They're accumulating a whole lot of money to fund research into vaccines, better tests & treatment.
Funding for research

I hope that it will result in good results on all of those aims.

But I also appreciate that Corona viruses have been around a really long time, known about & researched & thus far no vaccines have been identified at all. And really? The incentive there is huge for big pharma., just imagine the profits??

Obviously diverting funds into specific research is going to help & I guess we've all got to start with employing the best scientists & equipping labs.

I am not complaining or arguing nor do I care what thread that's in or where its at in the forum and certianly not trying to get thread banned. It just would he helpful to re-denine what "belongs here".
I'll put it this way:

"Worldwide impact of the coronavirus and related panic/disruption" does not equate to bitching about washing your hands after you piss. You've got toilet paper. Just f*cking use it. You know how to do family cloth. Switch to it. What was the purpose of your post? To complain.

"A thread to discuss..." A place to discuss....". You got lots of answers on how to freeze milk, and then decided to talk about it again. That's not a discussion, that's an advice thread.

Cause at this point, I am just throwing stuff out there hoping it will be on topic but I am very confused at what the topic is at this point if not direct impact of Covid-19
Impact is relevant. What I'm asking for is an awareness of scale. People are sick. People are dead. People are confused and worried. They don't know if/when they can be tested, or when they'll be able to go to work again...these are all discussions that make sense on this thread. Complaining about toilet paper when one (a) has it, and (b) knows what to do if they run out, is distracting and childish.

Sometimes, scale is relevant. I'm saying: it's now relevant here.

Something I'm really loving atm is the random expressions of gratitude everywhere.

My tired 4 days of 13 hour shifts in a row ass literally wanted to cry at every NHS thank you note I passed on my way home. I can't tell if I appreciate it or hate my overly emotional self right now ??

I did get fairy lights posted to me for "nurse Chrissy" though so yay.
Thank you for these! It was a good reminder for me that it's not all doom and gloom out there :)
Wow... This is pretty stunning. Chinese state media releases animated propaganda video mocking US coronavirus response - ABC News
I mean, it's accurate... if you assume the president is all of us in the US. (He is not, and many states have risen to the challenge far better... but still...)
Ya I saw this yesterday.... :(

I've gotta ask though.... who does China think they are winning the argument with?
Themselves?
America?
The rest of the world?

Do they think it will enhance their rep?

Because right now China is definitely suffering from a image problem.
Making fun of other countries who either misjudged or misguided about the virus. Let's face it SARS & MERS didn't affect me or my country at all.

It's not ok to send on over a few ventilators & PPE & aid to countries that are unable to cope. It looks nice as a news article but it doesn't do that much to fix their image.

A Chinese diplomat here in Australia has taken it upon himself, or perhaps was instructed by the CCP??..idk.. to make remarks regarding our, Australian, export trade agreements with China. Murmurs such as, 'perhaps Chinese people will not decide to eat your meat or drink your wine'. This suggestion soon reeled in several Australian politicians who retorted that China shouldn't really try to extort us Australians into not spear-heading an investigation about the origins of the virus.

Then, out of seemingly nowhere, another Chinese Diplomat steps onto the public stage here and praises Australia, and Chinese - Australian relationships. huh... not entirely consistent.

I'm not even sure Chinese *propagandist* videos rate serious thought much less response.

I mean, reads so very just to get a reaction out of others they can use to further claims at home the world hates them for trying to be helpful and good willing and what not.

As well as just a typical shenanigans in how they usually do rhetoric.

Plus comments on good relations with other countries, with countries like China making them, look only very self serving - not about the other country or the relation at all.

So just humbug. The world has bigger problems (hello, actual health crises still on) to mind.

ETA So to your Q, @blackemerald1 - I would also consider some times, it's not winning the argument, but the noise & being loud & in others' faces that is useful. To a wide variety of purposes. Just because it's diplomatical / state level doesn't make it less a petty social posture.

US v's China shenanigans. Neither a new thing, nor one that will aid either country (or anyone else) in slowing the death rate. As far as distractions go, it's a really excellent one.

Meanwhile in the rest of the world, most of the focus is "How do fix this virus situation asap?" Buying into diplomacy wars gets that conversation absolutely nowhere.

But I also appreciate that Corona viruses have been around a really long time, known about & researched & thus far no vaccines have been identified at all.
There's a corona virus that causes diarrhea in cattle and I know, for sure, there's a vaccine for that. (Because I've used it.) There are quite a few corona viruses that cause diseases in other species. I'm not sure how many of them have vaccines and it was hard to search that because all the results that want to come up are about the search for a vaccine for this particular, novel corona virus. I don't know that that fact that it's been possible to develop a vaccine to another virus in this family tells us much, but I guess it's encouraging to know that they've been able to make a pretty good vaccine for a somewhat similar virus.
who does China think they are winning the argument with?
Good question. Maybe their point isn't to win an argument at all. Could be they're trying to provoke someone who's easily provoked? I have no idea. This has all wandered off into some rather strange and not so useful territory and it's pretty hard to figure out what's going on below the surface without more information than we have or are likely to get.

@scout I was referring to the typical corona virus - like the common cold. No vaccine for that but it's had the hell studied out of it & it's been around a really long time. I wasn't accounting for every corona virus ever identified & only relating to human beings. :banghead: :wtf:

Maybe their point isn't to win an argument at all.

^I was only responding to the propoganda - and asking a rhetorical question??
