Our Pets

I have an algae eater and a tetra. The tetra is a bully, she nipped at all my other fish and killed them, so I am waiting for her to pass on before I get any other fish. Algae eater holds his own against her. I have seen him take a swipe at her when he needs to. I will never get any more red barb tetras!

My son had a goldfish, the cat was trying to get at the goldfish, cat got stressed lost all its fur, vet told my son had to move fish on, he did and cat got well??

@Carpman wow! That's interesting, and a little sad. Poor kitty! I always thought a fish tank would be like tv for a cat, something mellow to watch.

@Changing4Best I wish I could take your tetra. I take care of a tetra tank at school, which includes the kind you have. I found out that tetras make great tank mates for other tetras, and they come in so many colors and varieties, so I put about 20 in a big tank with snails and pothos growing out of the tank. Did you know that pirahnas are the cousins to tetras? They are fierce little guys, but they understand each other.

@Changing4Best I'm surprised your pet store didn't have any mice since people need to buy them as food for their snakes. Maybe they have feeder mice and rats in the back? Feeders make just as good pets as fancy ones, but I would make sure you get babies so they can bond with you, if you are still interested in getting them.

I had rats in college because I couldn't have a cat or dog, and my rats actually learned to come when called! They can be about as friendly as tiny dogs or cats. One thing about rats and mice though... I thought having girls would be good, but it turns out in rat world the girls mark their territories with tiny drops of urine, and that means even on you when you are holding them. It's rather irritating when their claws scratch the urine into the skin, not to mention the smell. I heard that boys do not mark the way girls do (but they have enormous testes compared to their body size, which can be a visual turn-off for some people.) If you are able to neuter two male rats or mice, that would be the ideal way to go, in my opinion, because they become calmer and less stinky, but I've heard this procedure can be somewhat expensive, compared to dog and cats, since vets don't typically do it.

I think your idea, posted in the Cat thread, of being a volunteer cat petter is a good one! There are multiple cat shelters in my town and I have brought students to them just to do that. It's such a peaceful and comforting thing to do, and the shelters really appreciate it.

Sorry I’ve had a bit of a dip the last couple of weeks, but ok now, yes max the cat is doing great? not sure about the goldfish though, hope he’s ok:) I’ve seen swans, horses, ducks, geese, squirrels, plenty dogs and cats, guinea pigs and rabbits, all last two weeks, I’ve been listening to Birds quite a bit too:)

Wicket (left) and Waffles live at the school where I work. I am on the feeding crew for the summer. Donkeys are so affectionate!
