I kinda switched. Was a nurse, then export coordinator, then worked in customer service as a team lead for an imaging company, now a proofreader.

I now own two businesses - one is animal-related services, and the other is editing services. And I'm finishing up my certificate in copyediting.

If I didn't have to work, I wouldn't, but I finally realized in 2020 I was very unhappy working for a company and a regular shift, so I decided to do what I really like. Honestly? I think the switch is allowing me to manage better. Once I work through my businesses full-time, I'll not have the stress of that awful full-time job.

Totally. Find what makes you happy, gives you meaning, and then follow that.

Was a lawyer. I now split my time across several charities working with dogs. About as polar opposite as it gets. And I haven't regretted it for a second.

I’ve made so many 180 degree turns in my life I should probably take up ballet

Spoiler: About that

I would exclude kid-stuff, but since I still intermittently work with horses, write for publication, sell art, compete &/or sell sports & dance stuff (like coach a sport, or fire-dance at a party), & pick up kitchen jobs? We’ll just float those. Beyond those intermittent sources of income & employment… a rough outline of major changes in my life below

- Military/Paramilitary/NGO/Crime
- Stay At Home Parent… & Homeschooler & K-8 teacher
- Nursing & Archaeology >>> (3 bachelors, 2 masters, 1 doctorate required = 8+ out of 12+ years done…when I got divorced and had to quit school, probably for good.)
- Investigative & Editorial this’n’that

- Unskilled Labor

The first 3 categories couldn’t have suited me any better, right on down to the ground, although they were all very different from each other.

I have to be in the right headspace for investigative work. Which means it’s not a perfect job for me, but it’s still something I used to be good at, and when I got divorced -and had to quit school- it’s something I did for a couple years, pulling on old skills from NGO years. Until I learned to take my ex’s threat of not being allowed to work any job -if I left him- except for crack whore, seriously.

So I spent the next 7 years (until my kid turned 18) living mostly off of barter economy.

The only thing I’m good for these days, in the land of actual jobs, is unskilled labor. So that’s what I do now.

I switched. Was a park ranger (sort of) that got promoted into more of a management job. Was in that park service type field for 20+ years. Was briefly a grocery store manager while I tried to get my pet sitting business going. Discovered I didn't much like the scurry of pet sitting and have been working in veterinary medicine since. I do well in that job, even though it's a very emotionally demanding job.

Am back in school to get my vet tech license. That is not going well. Working full time, managing PTSD and school feels like too much. But I also have some fairly significant learning disabilities so that definitely factors in to the struggles with school. (I'd promised myself I'd never go back to school after I graduated from college). I have also been dealing with a back injury and chronic pain from that, so that is probably also impacting my ability to do school.

But the changing jobs part? No regrets, even though it cost me dearly financially.

I feel like I need a career change. I currently own my own business and enjoy it well enough, make decent money and am good at it. I’m just wondering if I have a greater purpose? But I’m old. I don’t want to spend the money to get a masters and used to get triggered easily while working for others. I feel kind of stuck.
