New Here
Here are some of my core beliefs:

I am laughable
I am not real
I am to sacrifice myself for others
I do not deserve to say I or Me.
Nobody can assault me anymore than they could assault a plastic doll. It's not possible.
I can fix you.
I am empty.
I can accommodate anything.
I don't own anything and I've never really lived in this house.
I don't deserve feelings. I am an actress.

And how do you want to counter those?

One of the best sports psychologists (who works with golfers) said you can't be a good putter until you believe you are a good putter. If you don't believe you are, you won't become great.

I have a notebook I write my counter positives in - no negatives - just positives. I read them all the time......(because I did become a good putter....)

Thank you Freddyt. Yes I'm working on countering them. Good idea to keep a notebook But of course my beliefs are so deeply rooted, so old and so very deeply entrenched. I look for something else and I find it's simply not there.

Skate, that’s a good first step to isolate them. You are certainly not alone here with these beliefs. Like the other responder I’m curious how you counter them? Are you familiar with the varieties of cognitive distortions? Perhaps you could read through the list and see how you would categorize these.
Thank you OliveJewel. I couldn't see anything familiar in the list. I would categorize my beliefs as simply ' what I came to see as true ' based on how I was treated in relation to others. I am able to counter them on a conscious level but I believe my subconscious beliefs are what drives my behaviour.

That’s one of the big differences between cognitive distortions & core beliefs. However??? Core beliefs are often made UP of -even many/several- cognitive distortions, in addition to life experience (IE an amalgamation of life experience, distortions, symptoms/expressions, other people’s influence, etc.). Or they may be all that AND typified by miscellaneous distortions.

For example? One of my core beliefs that I’ve worked with the most is “Admitting weakness is wrong.”

That’s both all-or-nothing thinking AND labeling.

But? Because it’s a core belief, rather than “just” a cognitive distortion or three… there’s a whooooooole helluva lot more that goes into it. Even when I counter it in various ways, at best those counters are finger and toe holds. Exceptionally useful, as they allow me to start working on beliefs that cause me problems, but very much just the start of the work.
