DNA test

Have you ever done a DNA test? Why? Would you ever do one of them?

I was just thinking about it because I'm interested of knowing where my ancestors came from.

I wouldn't because I don't trust the government or private companies to handle my DNA and if I can reduce the number of places it's available to be searched up all the better. I also find the marketing very exploitative, specifically targeting vulnerable groups who are less likely to have a complete picture of their family due to war, genocide, slavery, etc. There is also some evidence that the results are much less accurate than what they send you and what they advertise.

I've debated it, but for an odd reason. My parents did infertility treatments to conceive me and about a year or so ago there was segment on the news on how the clinic my parents used screwed up and somehow used the wrong persons sperm to conceive a girl. So she grew up not knowing that here dad wasnt really her biological dad. I think the chances of that happening with me are slim simply because everyone thinks I look and act like my dad personality wise. And even if there was the off chance that my dad isnt my bio dad I really dont think I would really get that upset about it because my dad has been my dad for 31 years, for better or worse, and I just really couldnt think of him as anything else.

1. In school we all ran our own DNA several times, in different courses, for different reasons. The results were always incinerated, also by us, except for one time where the express purpose was “attempting” to damage/destroy DNA a samples to see what they looked like under different scenarios.

2. Contributed to a few different anonymous scientific number only blind & double blind studies. Personal fave = NatGeoSoc Genographic Project.

A) I happen to ADORE the various DNA art projects like DNA Portrait: The world’s most unique and personalized form of art... but there is legal precedent to your DNA being on public display = no expectation of privacy = no court order for your DNA to be used. So it’s something I haven’t done.

B) I DESPISE the geneology sites using it, for the same reason, but there’s nothing to be done, there. As tens of thousands of people I share DNA with have already uploaded their genetic profiles for govt & police use, as well as at least half a dozen that I share at least 25-50% of my DNA with (familial & close familial matches). Shrug. C’est la vie. There’s no such thing as privacy, these days. There’s only knowing how to circumvent the lack of privacy. It still grosses me out the number of people volunteering to be monitored, tagged by family groupings, & have their unique code so easily replicated.
