Feb 08th. slept 9 hours, the session left me tired yesterday, cracked another rough thing. Had a nightmare last night so I'm feeling a bit urky this morning. I'm starting to acknowledge that this situation had a heftier effect on me than what I dared to admit ... now that's the old cristalized ego family thing again

I'll be at one of my son's place to help with the grand-kids for a couple of days, so if I have time will come online just to see what's going on and get up on the news.

Hi Froggie,

Thank you for posting your progress during this therapy. It is wonderful to see the positive effect it is having on you.

Enjoy your grandchildren and the visit with your son.

This is a form of NLP, which this married couple devised based on NLP mixed with what they are trying to take from the science of EMDR. Whilst this has worked for you, NLP has no scientific or medical substance with trauma, other than a placebo effect, ie. you tried other things, didn't work, convinced yourself that this is the trick for you. Either or, it worked, and placebo treatments have as much validity for some as the majority... but NLP is not science, it is a coaching technique which fundamentals are based on communication improvement and ability to motivate, self esteem, etc. None of this has to do with trauma. This couple, named it in order to try and disguise a version of NLP around Shapiro's scientific notion and endorsed theories on EMDR.

Basically, this technique is playing with fire and cannot find any legitimacy outside placebo based on what I just read. Another couple of people trying to make a name for themselves within an expanding industry.

The plus though Froggie, is that it worked for you... and placebo treatments are proven to work... and it got you to open up and do something further with your own trauma.

Saying that, what worked for you and what could be considered any type of practicable option for a majority, that actually works for a majority, two different things.

NLP is big in Europe... not having a great time in other countries, as its quickly being demonstrated for what it is.... coaching, that's its limit. You can go do a four day course and be an NLP coach... that's how much science is involved in this, or psychology. Seriously... four days! My sister-in-law went and did one of these, then she thought she could solve all her sisters problems in a few sessions... because that's what they told her, and she believed them. It is a very good motivational technique, has great substance and foundation in business across the globe, except they pull the motivational part on people in training... then people, just like this couple who come up with this, decided to try and make their own off-shoot of a coaching based technique, trying to turn it into a trauma based technique. Sorry... wrong!

Motivation, self esteem building, etc, by itself can and will reduce traumatic memories... if the person is open to those approaches and believes in them, hence placebo effect. If you believe you are taking a sleeping tablet, for example, but are given a sugar tablet, it can have the exact same effect as the real thing, just from sugar, anywhere from 0% - 40% of the testing group.

Feb. 9th ... slept for 9.5 hours and was woken up by a cute 4 year old boy saying .... I'M HUNGRY ... ha ha ha ha now that's love therapy

Thank you for the research Anthony, effectively this method is working on me and my T did inform me in the beginning that it does not work on certain people. Like psychology in the beginning, many thought it was not a science. But hence something does happen to some and it would be interesting to have brain scans or more elaborate tests done just to see what happens as some images that pop up, I just can't explain. One thing for sure, I did get images that did explain and even confirm some physical somatisation. I wrote on this basically to permit people to have an idea of what this is about, and as you may have noticed, the test is this week and the next. My body has always better responded to alternative methods. As a child, I was sent home dying of leukemia and my father thought well nothing else to lose and he brought me to a naturopath ... still here and the doctors never figured out what happened. Certain things work for some and not for others.

If anything Anthony, I certainly don't want people to think that this is a sure cure thing as I really believe there is no such treatment now ... with research and the pressure victimes, survivors and carers exerce ... who knows

Thank you for this intervention, truly appreciate the supervision and care you and Nicolette put into this forum

Froggie,

It seems a core problem with PTSD is the low self-esteem and tendency to be our own worse enemies. (Basically, creating a lot of our own problems with negative thinking.)

Do you think building self-esteem give you more confidence in facing traumas and reduces the tendency to "beat yourself up"?

Deb

Building self esteem is a huge part of recovery for PTSD... but all the self esteem in the world won't solve emotional trauma.... I got heaps of self esteem... thought it would, it failed me in that area as well... just as I was told it would from people with decades of experience when I was at my worse. It absolutely helped me though in the recovery processes, especially exposure therapy.

That is one thing my therapist is working with me on, including coping skills, before she sends me on to the trauma therapist. Basically the tools that will make the trauma therapy as effective as possible.

My family heritage problem is not self-esteem ... like Anthony mentionned, but we have BIGGGG ego ... we HAVE to be strong .... on my father's side, they were part of the resistance during World War II ... so we got fed EGO meals 3 X a day plus ego snacks .... eurrrkkk

Anthony, forgot to mention, the only people who are allowed to do EMI are health professionals with either a bachelor's or master's degree. Here (Quebec), psychologists have to complet their doctorate to be recognized as such. I can unerstand your concerne that some improvise as professionals. As patients, we also have to be informed as to whom will be treating us. The specialist in EMI was refered to me by my psychologist as she works in a multi disciplined health team and is a skilled social worker.

Hope this clears things for everyone.

I just wanted to say that my 'divided self' (weird explanation - under another post) has all the self-esteem as well and actually I agree with this. I have a brother that has been pushing self-help tapes on me for years. I've done countless therapies to 'excise the evils within' (literally and not literally) but the bandaids have not work, they help with the scratches but not the deep gashes.

I love that you are building your self-esteem and feeling better. I believe that goes a long way to helping you feel stronger to continue the process of recovery, to keep digging and healing. I get that this is part of the 'tool box' that your tdoc using. I say you can never have too many ;)

Just my view point,
Rain
