What happened with my cleaner and how it affected me

Josh_0420

New Here
Last Saturday, I had sex with my Brazilian cleaner. There had already been flirting and attraction between us, and things became intimate. I haven’t really been dating for a long time because of my health problems and chronic pain, so I think I became more emotionally attached to the situation than I expected.

Afterwards, she kept texting me every day. She told me she told me I already missed you the day after we had sex, thought about me during the day, and was very attracted to me. She also talked about how much she enjoyed being with me. Because of all that, I started thinking that maybe this could turn into something more serious.

At the same time, I was already dealing with a lot of anxiety about my health and relationships. I was worried about putting too much of my problems on her, and I wasn’t really sure how I should behave because she was also my cleaner.

We had planned to go out together the following Sunday. Then, a few days later, she told me that she had been thinking about everything and that her feelings had changed. She said she didn’t think she wanted a relationship anymore and explained that she felt I hadn’t shown enough care or consideration towards her.

She mentioned a few things that had bothered her. She said that after cleaning my flat and having sex, she was hungry and felt that I hadn’t really thought about her comfort. She was also upset that I hadn’t offered to help her get to the date, and that I had chosen an Italian restaurant without first asking what kind of food she liked. She also told me that she was exhausted from having to translate all of our conversations.

That was difficult for me because I honestly hadn’t meant to make her feel that way. Looking back, I think I was quite emotionally guarded and probably came across as colder and more distant than I realised.

I accepted her decision and told her I respected her honesty. I also asked whether she still wanted to continue cleaning my flat, because I didn’t want her to feel like she had to keep coming if she was uncomfortable. She said she was fine with continuing.

What really confused me was that after telling me she didn’t want a relationship, she continued talking to me sexually and telling me how much she had enjoyed our time together and how attracted she still was to me. She even joked that if I got too close or hugged her when she came to clean, she might not be able to control herself.

Then the following day she didn’t message me like she had been doing before. That sudden change made me feel confused and unsettled.

Since then, I’ve been going over everything in my head and trying to understand what actually happened. Part of me thinks she genuinely liked me and really enjoyed being with me, but then realised that we weren’t compatible as a couple. Another part of me wonders whether the intensity at the beginning was exaggerated or whether there was some manipulation involved.

I’ve also started wondering whether she has done similar things with other clients and whether she sometimes becomes sexually involved with them. I don’t actually have evidence that she does, but the thought has been bothering me because of how quickly everything became so intense and then changed.

I’ve also been blaming myself. I keep wondering whether I was too cold, whether my personality put her off, whether I handled the date badly, or whether being out of the dating world for so long made me forget how to behave with someone I’m interested in. I sometimes take rejection very personally and start thinking that there must be something wrong with me.

The whole situation has affected me much more than I expected. I’m confused, hurt, embarrassed and spending a lot of time replaying our conversations and trying to figure out what I did wrong or what her intentions really were.

I don’t want to automatically decide that she manipulated me, but I also don’t want to dismiss my feelings if something about the situation genuinely made me uncomfortable.

I want to understand why this affected me so strongly, how much of this is about what actually happened versus my own fears and attachment, and how I can handle situations like this better in the future.

Hey Josh, I'm really glad you shared this because it sounds like you've been carrying a lot of confusion and self-doubt about what happened, and that's genuinely tough to sit with.

First, I want to say—it makes total sense that this affected you as much as it did. You're coming back into dating after a long time away, you were dealing with health anxiety, and then suddenly someone was giving you a lot of attention and affection. That's a big emotional experience, and your attachment response was completely natural and human. There's nothing wrong with that.

Here's what I'm hearing underneath all the replaying and analyzing: you're trying to figure out whether *you* did something wrong, or whether *she* was being dishonest or manipulative. And honestly? Both things can be true to some degree without either of you being the "bad guy."

It sounds like she *was* genuinely attracted to you and enjoying the connection. But it also sounds like maybe she moved really fast emotionally, realized mid-way through that the practical reality (the dynamic, the language barrier, the effort involved) didn't match the intensity of her feelings, and then pulled back. That's not manipulation—that's just... being human and uncertain. The mixed messages afterward (the flirty texts after saying no to a relationship) suggest *she* was confused too, not necessarily that she was playing games.

And yes, you could have been more thoughtful about those details she mentioned—the food, the transport, checking in on her comfort. But here's the thing: you weren't trying to hurt her. You were anxious, guarded, and probably a bit rusty at showing up for someone. That's not a character flaw; that's just where you were at.

The part that might be worth sitting with isn't "what did I do wrong" but rather "what do *I* need to feel secure and cared for in a connection?" and "how can I show up more openly when I'm interested in someone?" Those are things you can actually work on, rather than endlessly replaying conversations looking for evidence of manipulation.

You sound like a thoughtful person who genuinely cares about getting it right. That's a strength. Be gentle with yourself about being a bit rusty—you'll find your footing again.

How are you doing with all of this now?

How are you doing with all of this now?

That’s how I ended it :

Hey , I’ve been thinking about the cleaning arrangement, and I honestly feel it’s probably best if we don’t continue with it anymore.

I don’t have any hard feelings towards you at all, and I really appreciate everything you’ve done for me. I just think that, after everything that happened between us, keeping things this way might make things more complicated than they need to be. I think it’s better for both of us to have a little separation and move forward without mixing the personal and professional sides of things.

And I also want you to know that Saturday meant a lot to me too. I genuinely had a great time with you, and I’ll cherish the memory of that day and what we shared. I have no regrets about it, and I’m grateful that we got to experience that together.

I’d also be interested to hear how you see it and what you think about stopping the cleaning arrangement. I’m not trying to make this complicated or put anything on you I just think it’s fair that we both have a chance to share our perspective before we leave things there.

Thank you for everything, . I genuinely wish you the best and hope everything goes well for you. 😊

Me :

Thank you , I really appreciate that. 😊

I still think it’s better for us to stop the cleaning, though. I just feel that having you come to my home regularly could make things complicated again. I wouldn’t want something to happen between us again and then things become awkward or blur the line between friendship and work.

But I don’t want that to mean we completely lose contact. I genuinely value having you as a friend, and if you ever need anything while you’re here in London, please feel free to text me and ask. If there’s something I can help with, I’ll be happy to.

I just think having a little separation from the cleaning side is probably the best way for us to keep things comfortable and preserve the good relationship between us. 🤍

Me :

, honestly, your message made me emotional. 🥹🤍

You were very special to me too, and I’m genuinely grateful for everything we shared here , all the conversations, the laughs, the friendship we built, and of course everything that happened between us. I don’t want the way things turned out romantically to take away from all the good memories we have.

And please don’t feel that you need to apologise for everything. I think we both got caught up in something that felt really good and natural at the time, and sometimes these things become more complicated than we expect.

I understand what you mean about being afraid that it would affect the professional side, and I think stopping the cleaning is probably the right decision. I’d rather protect the good relationship we have than keep putting ourselves in a situation where the boundaries could become blurred again.

But I also don’t see this as having to completely disappear from each other’s lives. I’d be very happy to stay in touch as friends, talk from time to time, have a coffee sometime, or just check in and see how life is going. There’s no pressure or expectation from me I’d just like to keep the friendship we had.

And if you ever need anything , genuinely, you can always ask me. 🤍

Thank you for being such a lovely part of my time here too. I’ll always be grateful that we met.

I send the same blessings to you, your health and your family, and I genuinely hope life brings you lots of good things. 💕💕
