What Bad Use Of Grammar Annoys You?

LOL, this is hilarious! It's like one of those thread's threads that can make a person hypervigilant to please everyone, but however, I hope that's not the case for anyone! :roflmao:

My pet peeve is to see the word definitely. :D It's misspelled a LOT. Definately.

I should say, the reason it is such a pet peeve is that I couldn't spell it right for a long time, and spell checker kept underlining it until one day I looked at the spell checker word and broke it down to its root. Finite. Now I don't struggle with wanting to put an a in it. :p

I dislike/really super dislike if anyone starts a sentence with "but". I don't use that word. I use however.

Oh no . As I struggle to the end of a mind numbing dissertation, I never want to see the words, however, therefore, thus, consequently, subsequently or hence ever again:D.

I am a bit of a semantic freak though. I hate the word literally being used as a popular expression, "I'm literally starving", no, you're not literally starving. People in famine are literally starving, you're just looking forward to reaching Mcdonalds and stuffing a burger into your belly .

Text speak

It's embarassing, but my Mom actualy uses text speak and I don't get it - I guess she learns it from my nieces and nephews...

For the longest time, I thought LOL meant "Lot's of Love" because she used to always use that at as salutation, and then she started saying LOL, so I just made an assumption.

Some of us are a little behind on the text speak - I have to look it up in a glossary, which takes up extra time.

The thing about text speak is really funny for me- it shows me just how much of an age range there is here. By the way, LOL means 'Laugh out loud" and I sometimes use "BTW" meaning "By the way" I'd be happy to teach others "text speak" if they'd like... just message me and I'll give it all to you- well, all I know anyway. :D ;)

But to use it in everyday spoken language, that just irritates me, or an over excessive amount of it in one post.

I don't have a problem with wrong spelling or grammar.

The reason being that I could read before I went to school at 4 and a half but when I started school I was taught ITA (Initial Teaching Alphabet). I had to unlearn everything I had already been taught. ITA is a phonetic alphabet and you read and write phonetically. During the phase where I was meant to change back to the correct way I was experiencing all kinds of trauma and I just couldn't grasp it at all! My spelling is atrocious and I rely on the spell checker all the time. I studded Creative Writing and my teacher said my understanding of grammar was natural as I didn't know a noun from a verb and still don't.

I have a dyslexic husband and 2 dyslexic sons and I'm grateful that they can all read and write at all and don't care too hoots how it is written! It was so painful for them when they were little, just trying to grasp the basics. I also worked as a Learning Support Teacher for a while so I understand the difficulties people can have.

:D Just to keep this light, I do have a problem with the way kids speak. Things like, 'init' instead of 'isn't it' and 'solid,' meaning 'good;'

This apparently means:
"Wow! You are the coolest person. Do you want to hang out at my place?"

Maybe it's just my age but I really don't understand a word that comes out of their mouths!:roflmao: The BBC have produced a lexicon of Youth Speak which is worth a read!

but wot is wrong with starting with but and forgotten full stop's? I think it is verry hard to learn english, and once we have mastered it at the age of about too yeers we all just forgets it. i also get verry verry cross abot the peeple who don't put a capital'i'. to me the hole think is just pure laziness. i can forgive children who make mistakes but i get crooss wen grownups don;t correct themselves in the next post after they get it pointed out to them that have have made a mistook and they have commented that they gotten a warning and then they just carry rigght on and do the hole thing all over again.

I think that just about sums up what I would like to convey!
