I just came across this forum and thought I would try posting. I have had anxiety most of my life and have been diagnosed with PTSD a couple years ago. While in treatment, I have been seeking a community where I would be understood and share the company of others - this disease can be quite isolating. Recently I was told by a therapist they thought PTSD was curable, that they could indeed "cure" me. Having done CBT, EMDR, as well as studying Bourne and currently in psychotherapy as well as participating groups, I found this approach simplistic. In any event, the causes of my trauma stem from my upbringing, had my first serious series of anxiety attacks when I was around 5 years old. I'm functional, but am always working on myself. Happy to be here and read posts!

That therapist must be new to the field of PTSD. Use caution around whatever they suggest to you.

On a positive note, Welcome to the PTSD Forum. While there is no "cure", there is hope. Once you learn how to deal with triggers/anxiety, you can learn what your boundaries are and live good life. Let us know what he recommends.

You are in good company here. Lots of supportive people frequent this site, as well as share good information. I have PTSD from multiple traumas. My childhood was anything but kind. My young adulthood was anything but kind. Now I am old, and I'm still here. :)

Nice to meet you, LhasaLover.

Thank you, Safe Now. I needed to hear that from another sane person. I honestly an open to anyone's opinion and respect others, but I have had red flags waved over and over since I started seeing this therapist in joint therapy. I've been treated by people who are trained to work with veterans and have long term PSTD. Thank you for the validation and kind words, it makes me a little teary to actually communicate to a survivor. I don't know anyone with PTSD, I have an excellent therapist I can use as a resource during emergencies until I am making more money and that has gotten me by as of late. It's a difficult road we walk, but I continue each day to look for and enjoy whatever light I can find and take. I look forward to reading your future posts.

Very nice to meet you, Safe Now!

Hi LhasaLover,

Welcome to the PTSD Forum! :)

I have never heard of PTSD being "cured", but with effective therapy and hard work, people can manage symptoms to a point where they would no longer fit the criteria for having PTSD. I don't know if that meets a definition of "cured" , but I believe most of us here are trying to reach that point.

I hope you find the information and support here helpful as you work on healing. It is great to have a place to share where people really do understand.

Wishing you the best.

Debbie

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I am managing my symptoms, in fact managing them well, am I cured - no. I do recognise when I am being overwhelmed or in a trigger/stressor situation and I use grounding techniques to help me. If that fails, I acknowledge how I am feeling and take the time I need to recover.

I don't think it can be cured. My therapist recently told me of a patient that was doing exceedingly well, but when she had a daughter and the daughter reached the age of her own abuse, things fell into a tailspin. Triggers just happen. I think the best thing you can do is learn about the disease, find people and an experienced professional who support you. I know for myself, PTSD is much less of a burden if I get enough sleep, exercise to release the anxiety, reach out to friends and family, and avoid alcohol.
