In the thread "Self Harm - Help Me Understand" @Springer80 mentions an abstract by a member of the European Society for Trauma and Dissociation. Apparently it's about how positive attachment creates opioid receptors in the brain and how these connections are strengthened by further such experiences, and how people missing them attempt to get around the problem with a range of coping mechanisms ranging from self harm to OCD and eating disorders.

This puts a lot of things together that I would like to understand better, but I don't know where to find the abstract and she doesn't give any further information. She hasn't been on the board for a while.

Can anyone help? Either with a link to the abstract or any similar sources? Thanks in advance.

A number of articles popped up when I googled "attachment theory and self harm"

But I haven't had a chance to read any of them yet. The subject of attachment is fascinating!

Thanks @Panda Bear. I I looked at a few of these. Unfortunately some of them seem to be written from a judgemental point of view that upsets me so I didn't read them in detail. If I do manage to find a really good one I'll be sure to post a link to it. There are so many different parts to what I am looking for, I'm not sure how to search for it.

I've really enjoyed reading most things on 'attachment theroy'. Even if it doesn't pertain to SH.

For me, personally, In the therapeutic setting, attachment theory has been crucial! My T uses it with great skill and it has allowed for an amazing, yet safe and productive trust and attachment. It's made a huge impact on my suicidal tendencies(I've only SH once and it was very recent). Tons of rebuilding those lose neuropath ways, when done safely and correctly, I think it works!

This is the best I could find.
Thank you! I'm a bit confused though. I see one paragraph and an invitation to purchase the pdf for a lot of money. Where are you seeing references? I'm sure there is a simple answer, but I'm not seeing it.
