It seems to me that emotional trauma has the potential to be so insanely devastating and intense, that other things in life can wind up paling in comparison. It's not that those other things are less bad than they normally would be, but more like if you just got shot in the chest, the cut on your leg is probably not going to be on your mind. Just like the emotional equivalent of that.
