:hug:I have been blessed with an amazing T, and it was important to feel comfortable first, then have a "safe place" well "rehearsed', and I always have the option of letting him know I am overwhelmed.
He does "talk me down" by "taking me to my safe place" before stopping. It's desired to learn to be able to get yourself to that "safe place" when necessary. He helps me practice that.
MUCH can be accomplished by learning to reprocess memories, so they have less power over you.
EMDR helped me reprocess the death of my daughter, and it has made a HUGE impact in my life in other ways.
I would be cautious about a therapist who was "emphatic" about stopping the session.
EMDR is NOT hypnosis, and it is YOUR decision to stop, or back off of an issue that is too intense.
It would be appropriate to agree, that you had located a feeling that would indicate a "place or area" that should be revisited at a later session.
You need to trust the T completely, and NOT have them want to hurry through the process. It is different for every client, but absolute trust and "building" your safe place and learning how to "ground your feelings" takes time! You may need them when you might be processing thoughts and feelings while you are NOT in a session. Our subconscious mind may continue working on your issues. You must have that "safe place" well rehearsed to give you confidence!
Listen to your "gut" feelings! I haven't read your other posts, but your feeling the need to reach out for advice and impressions, kind of says to me that you aren't comfortable with the information given to you. Also, the demeanor of the T seems to not have set well with you.
My main "clue" is that she was "emphatic" about NOT stopping the session if you become uncomfortable. I can understand if she said she would want you to try to verbalize that need to stop, but to just say "no" seems odd to me.
(I would be curious, as to how long she has been working with EMDR) If she doesn't accept your insurance, I doubt if I would make the "gamble"! I would choose driving a little farther than paying ALL of it out-of-pocket.
It's expensive, and being unpredictable as to how many sessions it can take, that is something to consider.
I'm sorry to have written such a long post... I tend to get "wordy" when I am passionate about something!
I have had such success with EMDR, that I would hate it if you wasted time or money on the wrong T. I think your "gut feeling" is nudging you in the right direction!
Good luck, BLESSINGS, as well as peace about your decision I am sending your way!
