I think your rock, rope and pond solution is cost effective and simple.

Plenty of decent dogs at the shelter.

I've only ever had cats I picked up in Japan (Yokosuka & Okinawa) so maybe it's a breed thing... But they all trained easier & faster than any dog I've ever owned. And I'm talking not just been housebroken (I refuse to own cat litter. Ever.)... But coming when whistled for, heeling, retrieving, opening the sliding glass door or window to let themselves out, etc. Never could get them to close the door, though.

Woman in town here trains her cats to use the human toilet. Leaves the door ajar and no clue how she does it but seen the cats sit on the seat and pee.
Inside cats cos of traffic and no litterbox.
Amazing.

Both the stray cat and stray dog we found came out of the box house trained/litter trained.

Maybe not litter trained, per se, because I think litter contains an enzyme which attracts cats. But he got the litter box thing down the first night.

So I don't have much advice to offer aside from telling you that you have to catch the dog in the act.

The dog is too far gone. I'd get rid of it. But it is not too old to eat. 2 years old might be border line.

I got some good Korean recipes for dog. Tastes like goat. Hell if push comes to shove just stew the hell out of it. Protein don't come cheap these days.

Yorkie-poo, smootchy wootchy is the problem. Your wife has to understand that this is a dog, and has to be treated like a dog. Smootchy wootchy are people terms, and dogs don't understand them. In fact, those terms confuse them.

Don't get mad. Just be ferm. Take the mut to a trainer with experience, and ask your wife to go too. LISTEN TO WHAT THEY SAY, and stick with the program they lay out. Believe it or not, that dog is looking for you to take over.
